Usernames

Post by BobBates »

In honor of Avcanada's new found civility and respectfulness of its members, I hereby am going to use my real name.
Anybody else with the guts? :smt014 :smt008

No, sorry I will pass.

If you don't know me enough to figure out who I am, you probably don't need to know.
With the amount of details I'm giving about myself here, most of the people I am flying with or flew with, figured out my real name (and vice-versa)

This by itself is a very good way to force yourself to behave correctly.

Jim Watson. I don't need to be anonymous, I'm proud of what I post here. I only kept the PilotDAR, because is has been used elsewhere, and I figured it was better to maintain continuity.

I strongly prefer to remain anonymous,
and guard my identity. In real life I am
a bee keeper.

I will remain LF when I post. I use my real name when I PM as I believe that is proper. The fact that my postings are under an alias in no way removes my responsibility for them. In most cases I would say the same things over beers, and I would have to apologize at the same times and for the same reasons I do here. If you review all my posts you will know far more about me than simply knowing my real name will ever give you. In fact my alias discloses more about me than my real name does :smt040

I find it funny that we go through the same cycle of respect, disrespect, "now boys play nice" every 2 or 3 years and every time people believe :prayer:

And Colonel, I'm very disappointed, I thought you were the real Colonel Sanders

I am getting more reaction than I expected.I think a lot of members new my real name already.
My beaver bob name was started by a regular passenger about 15 years ago and, much to my displeasure, stuck to the point that when I got hired where I am now the CSA's new that but not my real name.

People worry about silly stuff. Few people know my real name in real life, I rarely go by it, it doesn't seem to bother them. I personally don't care who anyone is here. Some I know who they are, others I don't. Anyone I do know, is the same way here as they are in person. The rest it don't matter. I suspect that they'd be the same way.

Something to think about. A lot of the day, many of us communicate and don't use our real name. I might use several during a day, my personal current favorite to be using is Whiskey Victor Whiskey. I trust the guy I refer to as Terminal or Tower, or sometimes Radio, I don't need to know their names. I've probably spoke to some of those guys a thousand times or more for the last twenty years or so, and I still got no idea who they are, and personally, I don't need to know, and most of the time I don't care. Doesn't affect my ability to communicate with them.

I'm going to remain anonymous, though I hardly am anymore.

Besides, its been tough to try and keep up with the Colonel's post count, he's lapped me twice already!

It would be pretty easy, what with all my picture posting and rambling about the coast and beavers lately.. plus I seem to have known or met quite a few off the board. Regardless, nothing to hide here. And if you bump into me, be sure to say hi!

My 02 cents worth

If you are currently working as a commercial pilot and are not about to retire, then there are 2 things you IMO should not do

1) Have a face book page. If you have to have a face book page be very, very, very, careful what pictures get posted on it and what comments are saved.

2) Provide your real name on Avcanada.

I don't give my identity in my posts, but I'm happy to give my name to people who PM me. I'm more concerned about trolls outside using my identity against me, rather than any idiots on here. (I'm not famous or anything).

There is a big difference between things you say in private to people at the local flying club and things that you write on the internet.

You know what? In this day and age, if you do not have an internet presence in some which way shape or form (Facebook, instagram, pinterest, twitter, whatever) while looking for work or somewhat established in your career, people are going to wonder why. They are going to think you ARE trying to hide something or that you are socially inept, or a derelict etc. Now, I know you seem to think this is all devils play, but if you're a reasonable human bean, you should know better then to have 1) open privacy status 2) have the boss as a 'friend' 3) post debaucherous photos all over Facebook. As such, if you are 'that guy' you probably would get turfed from most jobs anyways. dont think thats the case? I'll go find the study we recently reviewed in one of my business management courses that points to people NOT being hired for 'hiding' from the web/employers.

If you're honest, open and straightforward on this board.. then you have nothing to worry about by using your real name!

I'm not criticizing your choice to use your real name because that's totally up to you, but suggesting a lack of guts for people who choose not to is unreasonable. Internet anonymity is never a bad idea and the terrain is littered with people who wish that they had remained anonymous. And even though some people may think they've figured out who someone is they never know for sure unless that person acknowledges it.

Plus it is possible to be polite and respectful without giving your real name, and giving your real name is no guarantee that you will be.

Indeed. Personally I would strongly advise that one not openly post their real name, and especially not their license number as I've seen some do in the past. If I was an evil person, I could think of a lot of ways to cause a person trouble armed with those two bits of correlating info.

Either way, I've become aware as of late that my own anonymity online has become somewhat less, which has brought its own issues, and might preclude my continued posting here.

I'm Shane. I stand by every single thing I have ever posted. I mean, mostly. I mean, except for the stuff I apologized for afterwards. And probably a bunch of other things I should have apologized for. But I have never posted pictures of myself whilst intoxicated, nor have I posted pics of anything umm south of the Equator, so here's hoping this hasn't ruined my chances of running for PM in the next election.

I figure that if people know my true identity:

1) Air Canada won't hire me
2) TC won't like me

As you might suspect, both of the above keep me
awake at night. That said, everyone knows who I
am, and where I am, so if you're passing by, please
drop in and say "hi".

I find people in person are invariably good company,
regardless of how fearsome their online persona
might be

Even ., whom in person is actually a sweet little
old man. He did teach me some new swear words,
though! I suspect he could make a petty chief blush.

I too stand by every post I've ever made.

...and I will never ever give my true identity on the internet.
Anybody else with the guts?
...nothing at all to do with guts.

A good friend of mine is a high school principal. His house has been set on fire, car vandalized, family terrorized...all because of what he's said...not done...but said.

...and the vandals never left their name...
