Remember him? He landed a 172 in Red Square. Wonder where he is today?
Anybody?
Guys...not enough coffee I guess...could somebody move this to general? Thanks.

Did you type this from a computer? They're being used to give answers these days.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mathias_Rust#Later_lifeWhile doing his obligatory community service (Zivildienst) in a West German hospital in 1989, Rust stabbed a female co-worker who had rejected him. The victim barely survived. He was convicted of attempted manslaughter, sentenced to two and a half years in prison and released after having served fifteen months.[10] Since then he has lived a fragmented life, describing himself as a "bit of an oddball."[11] After being released from court, he converted to Hinduism [12] in 1996 to become engaged to a daughter of an Indian tea merchant. In 2001, he was convicted of stealing a cashmere pullover and ordered to pay a fine of DM 10,000; the fine was later reduced to DM 600.[10][4] A further brush with the law came in 2005, when he was convicted of fraud and had to pay €1,500 for stolen goods.[10] In 2009 Rust described himself as a professional poker player.[13] Most recently, in 2012, he describes himself as an analyst at a Zurich based investment bank

The details of his flight were one heck of an interesting read. Needs a made-for-tv movie at least.Doc wrote:Alrighty then, yup....should have used google. Thought this would be more fun. Smarty pants!

Here is an interesting article from Air & Space a few years ago. Apparently his flight to Red Square was the last time he flew a plane.

With a colorful life like that, maybe he could become an airline pilot?

Re: Matt Rusk?
At first I had a lot of sympathy and maybe a twisted way of respect for him. But when you read the rest of the story, in particular the attempted man slaughter, it feels like he was just a psycho with a deadwish instead of an adventurous rebel.
A shame really. Mabye that behaviour started by some wrong treatment by any of the involved governments, but it seems unlikely, after all the US wasn't involved.

Re: Matt Rusk?
Pretty ballsy flight plan to embark on with just 50 hours under your belt, nevermind the Helsinki-Moscow leg and Red Square landing. Seems odd to me too that the flying club wouldn't be asking a 50 hour pilot some questions about the need for aux tanks in the back seat. Reading it again, I guess it doesn't say the tanks were installed specifically for his flight.
