KLN 90B HELP!
Hi Guys,
I am in need of some KLN 90B help. I am quite comfortable using Garmin systems and want to become just as proficient with the KLN 90B for IFR. I have read all the manuals but am having an issue activating a leg which should be a very simple procedure.
Here's a simple flight plan for example
CYXU YXU ZR CYZR
On the ground in CYXU I want to activate YXU to ZR which is V308. On a Garmin this is straight forward and on the KLN 90 the users guide says press Direct To TWICE then enter. This SHOULD switch between "direct to" and "activate" mode. However, no matter how many times I press Direct To it will not switch over. This is kind of a pain because it takes a few miles away from the airport before it switches over to YXU ZR. I could do Direct To ZR but that's technically not correct and in many other situations this wouldn't work where the nav aid is not co-located at the airport.
I'm hoping there are some KLN Kings here because I really am stuck!
Thanks!!

Re: KLN 90B HELP!
I reread the manual and think I figured out why. It looks like on the KLN you can only activate a leg when it is in OBS mode as opposed to the Garmins (1000 and 430) where it can be leg or OBS mode. Then once past the fix OBS mode off and everything should sequence correctly. I will try it tomorrow and let you guys know. I guess it's a couple more button pushes than the newer Garmins but that's ok.
5.9.7 Activating A Waypoint While In The OBS Mode
While in the OBS mode, you may activate another waypoint
by using the normal Direct To method or by using
a second method. This second method activates
another waypoint without changing the selected course
(OBS). In other words, when the new waypoint is activated,
the D-Bar is not recentered. In figure 5-116 the
KLN 90B is in the OBS mode and the selected course is
90°. You have just crossed INITT intersection and
desire to activate the next waypoint in the flight plan,
FINAL, without recentering the D-Bar.
1. PressD(figure 5-117). The rules described in
section 3.8, “DIRECT TO OPERATION”, dictate
which waypoint identifier will be initially displayed on
the Direct To page.
2. Press Da second time. The annunciation
DIRECT TO changes to ACTIVATE (figure 5-118).
The right side still displays the appropriate waypoint
page. Repeated presses of Dalternates between
DIRECT TO and ACTIVATE. Make sure ACTIVATE
is displayed.
3. Press Eto approve the waypoint page and activate
the waypoint (figure 5-119). The selected
course does not change, therefore this method does

Re: KLN 90B HELP!
Press Direct to but don't enter any info into the empty page, just enter twice and it will give you a track bar indication with respect to the leg that you are nearest to in your flight plan
Re: KLN 90B HELP!
Go to the Flt Plan section, enter the flight plan, save it.
Then go to flt plan select the flt Plan , and active it, once you reach 40kts
it will activate.

Re: KLN 90B HELP!
Direct Clear Enter will delete the direct to and activate the leg that the aircraft is on. However this doesn't work in my scenario as I am still on the ground in CYXU and want to activate the 'next' leg. If I cancel the direct to it will just activate CYXU - YXU. I want YXU - ZR (V308) active so I can take off and intercept it.
I haven't had a chance to try the OBS method yet but I think it will work.
On the G1000 I just highlight and activate YXU - ZR and that leg becomes active.
Edit:
CYXU - YXU 19 DEGREES
YXU - ZR 271 DEGREES ( V308 )
Right now when I take off it is impossible to intercept V308 with the KLN 90B because CYXU - YXU is active which is the wrong track. If I went to the VOR first everything would automatically sequence ok but that isn't going to happen in this case. I want to force the GPS to activate the airway YXU - ZR and it looks like the only way to do this is with OBS.

Re: KLN 90B HELP!
Highlight ZR in the FPL page, then press direct, clear, enter
Re: KLN 90B HELP!
That works if I am in between YXU and ZR but if I am on the ground in CYXU it works for a couple seconds then automatically sequences CYXU to YXU.pilotsteve wrote:Highlight ZR in the FPL page, then press direct, clear, enter
Re: KLN 90B HELP!
Has it occured to you to omit the CYXU from the FPL? if YXU and ZR are in waypoints 1 and 2 in the FPL page then the Direct-Clear-Enter sequence will join the #1 and #2 waypoints in the FPL and sequence from then on in LEG mode. Voila, problem fixed.
Re: KLN 90B HELP!
delete CYXU, then the KLN logic will know your between YXU and YZR, otherwise get airborne and as soon as you pass YXU it will cycle itself over.
or if you want to do it the hard way, OBS YZR or OBS YXU till your on the track then take it out of OBS.

That is brilliant! Thanks!mattas350 wrote:Has it occured to you to omit the CYXU from the FPL? if YXU and ZR are in waypoints 1 and 2 in the FPL page then the Direct-Clear-Enter sequence will join the #1 and #2 waypoints in the FPL and sequence from then on in LEG mode. Voila, problem fixed.
