Re: flying
Best question we've had here in a long time.
It's an absolute blast. Yesterday I took off from an airport with some of the best scenery in the world. Got cleaned up over the water, then turned back and climbed out over snow capped mountains. Checked out a couple of the places I'm going to snowshoe at this winter but it's still a long way from the snowline, might have to wait until January. Had to click on Otto before getting into RVSM and then it was many hours of fuel checks and waypoint checks and radio frequency changes and "Gander Gander ...". Then an hour and a half from arrival you get back into flying mode. The arrival was into a very busy airport but before the time of day where it actually gets busy which meant many high speed shortcuts and screaming dives, dodged a couple cells, followed by an approach in very gusty winds pushing a big bird around like it was a C-172. Landing uneventful.
Afterwards one of the F/As asked how worried we were up front as she's never seen it that bad and I had to admit it was a ton of fun. Other than it being 2 crew instead of single crew, I'd say the flying itself is every bit as challenging and enjoyable as any other flying. Mind you, there is a lot less of it in a given month, but that's fine with me.
I'd say the 705 flying is just as much fun as any other kind of flying, but there is less of it so if that's your fetish stick with a busy operator.

Re: flying
This is where Im at... an atpls worth of time in a moo too. I cant imagine leaving the hand bombing world, hence, do people in the 705 still like "flying." Im unsure if otto management would give you the same high *pun intended*.

Re: flying
I'm in a 704 Biz Jet and the destinations are drastically better than what I got used too in the BE20, which I am gonna guess are very much the same as your mootoo. Life is great, the flying is great! I'm gonna be careful not too give too much away since my boss is an avcanada member and I may want a raise some day!

Re: flying
It's still flying. When the wheels come up I can physically feel myself disconnecting from all the frustration of the airport environment and work, and just settle down to do what I do. I secretly suspect that when pilots say they no longer feel any attachment to flying, and that aeroplanes are just tools, they are lying. I love flying. Aeroplanes are awesome. I've been doing this for quite some time now, and I still think human flight is a miracle.
Re: flying
Sometimes I become jaded due to all the craziness that is this industry, and I think about doing other things. But whenever I am driving down the road, and a great song comes on the radio, my imagination wanders back to the cockpit and the feeling of freedom I get from flying, being able to disconnect myself from the Earth and its problems, albeit for a short period of time. From a C-152 to a B-737 that feeling hasn't changed.

Re: flying
There are a few songs I hear that I know exactly where & what was going on when I heard them flying... one in particular was skirting a wicked thunder storm in the Peace River area in a PA-32 heading for Simpson. Know this doesn't really relate other than the above post.

I myself am just getting into 705 from the lowly depths of Part 91 and 702 where OTTO was never seen or heard of... And I have wondered the same thing myself about moving up...
I figure if I don't like 705 (which I doubt), I can ALWAYS go back. So why not try.
Re: flying
Reminds me of the time I was going up through an awful lot of dreary overcast, fiddling with the ADF and looking for an AM station while the FO flew. I think I was even flying Teeg's mootoo. Anyways, just as we break out into the clear blue sky around the lower flight levels the radio comes to life with Louis Armstrong belting out 'What a Wonderful World.' It really was.sheephunter wrote:There are a few songs I hear that I know exactly where & what was going on when I heard them flying...
I can't see 705 being any different.

Re: flying
I was listening to a live recording of Rush playing "Working Man" (or it might have been "What you're Doing") as I approached the airport in a single Otter on amphibs straight into a blood-red sunset. There was no wind whatsoever and the air was dead still. The band played their final note at the very instant the mains squeaked onto the pavement, followed by the audience's applause as the nosewheels touched down. You could never repeat such perfect timing. I felt exalted.

Nah.
I bet he hoisted them "proudly high in hand" like a trophy after a triumphant game!
If I were admin this part would be split off and made an epic sticky thread about how awesome flying and music are. Maybe while deleting my post suggesting it.

Re: flying
Kind of in the same shoes here! Currently doing 704, wondering whether or not to make a leap to 705. Part of me even wants to make a step in the other direction. I suppose the adventure will just be in a different way...

Re: flying
I am not sure that it is so much an issue with 705 or the type of aircraft you are flying. I always figured that your personal happiness was defined by a 3-part equation:
1) Enjoying the place where you work (which has more to do with company culture, people, and work schedule than metal size and destinations).
2) Making sufficient money to have an acceptable standard of living.
3) Living somewhere that you like living.
I am presently doing the 705 thing, but am hoping to transition to the 604 world in the later stage of my career, with the hopes of more finely tuning item 3).

Re: flying
Love every second of it. Even the more boring times.
705 airline flying was what I always wanted to do, and I am not disappointed. Flew 704 no autopilot or fd for a number of years and I enjoy this just as much. Its different though, like managing the descent so that its an idle descent until the power comes up on final.
One of my favourite times is after the gear and flaps come up and the aircraft is smoothly accelerating to climb speed. After flying turbo props it is amazing how smooth a jet is.
