Soviet Heavy Aircraft An-22

Post by AviationCV »

Just recently the Soviet “Antei” became the precious guest in Khabarovsk, Russia. In 2009 there were only two flying units of An-22 in the world. So this plane can really be seen in the air very seldom today. Powered by four turboprop engines each driving a pair of contra-rotating propellers, the design was the first Soviet wide-body aircraft and remains the world’s largest turboprop-powered aircraft to date. Indeed, the pictures can’t convey this but it is huge. The plane can transport 700 passengers!

Thats a nice looking machine. Never saw one in camp paint. Much nicer than the standard white with blue trim.

Wikkipedia:

A proposed civil airliner version capable of seating 724 passengers on upper and lower decks was planned but wasn't constructed. (For comparison, a typical Boeing 747 can carry 400–500 passengers.)

Impressive. I think Porter should operate these off the Island. There would be no need for runway extensions.

Thanks for posting. It's an impressive machine. I compared it to the Belfast and it's twice the airplane.
