Had to chuckle today

With all the debate going on with foreign workers in Canada I had to chuckle today. Saw CanJet land on 06L in YYZ and then exited right and basically was asked by tower "WTF? Why would you even exit that direction?". As soon as I heard that I knew I would hear a "non-Canadian" accent come on the radio and sure as heck there was. I had to chuckle because of the fact of the issue of non Canadian pilots in Canada going on. I too was wondering, where the frig are you turning? There is not a high speed exit to the right and for that matter NOTHING to the right. No terminal, no FBO, ....nothing! A simple mistake this time but what's next? And for those that criticize Gilles..............

So does that imply they don't have airports as "big" as YYZ in Europe or are they just stupid because they are European? You do realize that it's comments like this that make us sound like complete idiots! Right?

Whatever, try flying out of Frankfurt for a few months without making any mistakes. I've flown with Germans for years and have found them to be very capable and professional.

I've even heard of Canadian pilots landing on a taxiway, or even attempting to land at the wrong airport. But obviously this incident, again, is a foreign pilot issue.

Another ridiculous thread. Hey was the Transat flight that glided into the Azores flown by a foreign pilot too?

I wasn't really trying to focus any attention on skill level. More like if things like this happen people will just comment on things like "That's what happens when you bring foreign pilots in". Sorry if I made it sound like it was a skill comment. Its like if Obama really messed things up, people (some not all) in the US would have probably said that's what happens when you vote in a black president. It's wouldn't really be his fault. He was just dealt a crappy hand with the economy when voted in. Almost like he was being thrown under the train in that manner. So that's why I had to chuckle because I can just hear it now "That's what you get when you hire foreign pilots that don't know the area" or something along those lines. By no means do I support the TFW program though.

Firstly, the majority of Air Transat pilots are Quebecers so yes, TS236 was flown by foreign pilots

.
Secondly the fuel burned by Canjet is paid for by TTC so it really doesn't matter if their pilots get lost.

No no no....Canadian pilots do not ever make mistakes.

Only foreigners. Just wait for an accident or incident and you will hear the accent..
This protectionism espoused by some may come back to haunt all of us, when other countries start to reciprocate. I believe it may already be happening and there are a lot more Canadian pilots flying as "foreigners" than foreigners flying for Canadian airlines..
This was never about reciprocity. It was about an employee from one company being the paid attack dog to try and hurt a competitor. But reading the original post, it seems to have brought out the worst of some Canadian pilots...and I suspect if some had their way, English speakers would be considered to have a foreign accent...oh wait. That is already happening. Good to know those from Haiti and Jamaica do not speak with an accent.

I literally got yelled at every time I landed in Rome, I think it's just because they're Italians? And I'm a foreigner?

It's a good thing nobody pays you to think.
Good old fashioned, subtle, wholesome, Canadian racism.

I heard atc arguing with sunwing to keep the speed up in the descent.
To which the crew says "ok decreasing speed" atc "no INCREASE your speed" sunwing "ok decreasing" atc "did you say increase or decrease" sunwing "we are decreasing speed sir" atc "no go faster increase your speed increase." Sunwing "ok increasing" atc "yes faster..... (big sigh)"
Not to pick on sunwing but it was pretty funny.

What a stupid thread this is.
Try learning a language well enough to communicate and then fly into some foreign international airports. I hope no one chuckles at you...
As Dave said, this is just plain workplace racism. Keep it to yourself.

I agree terrible...
Go fly in Russia and tell me how funny you think it is when you're the one with the accent and making a mistake or two.
Get off your high horses!

No, I'm pretty sure we got it.
I sure hope you've never made a simple mistake. Wouldn't want people chuckling and asking what you are going to screw up next.

Really? I find that statement offensive in its inaccuracy. I am an expat pilot with extensive airline experience forced to seek employment outside Canada, and with the current TFW government policies combined with the hiring practices at Sunwing and CanJet, I do not "qualify" for a position there. Ask me if I care if Gilles or whomever is compensated by his employer or what their motivations are in fighting against the current situation!
As it happens, I have no desire to return to the tax-slave environs of Canada anymore. But the questioning of the motives for trying to give jobs in Canada to Canadians is completely off base. Still, people are free to dig their own graves, I suppose.
As far as chief's comments, I get the sense he's never flown anywhere outside of his local circuit pattern, let alone outside of the country. Calling it racism is a bit over the top, sounds more like plain old ignorance to me.

While the statement may be offensive to you, it is not because of the inaccuracy.
If you take the time to read Mr. H's original threads you will see Sunwing accused and vilifiied of doing something illegal...that is inaccurate and inoffensive to me....and I dont have anything to do with Sunwings.
If you look at the responses to his posts, the ignorance you suggest is being displayed by Chief is minor by comparison to some of the posts on Mr. Hs thread by others. He had the mob whipped up to a lathering fury against Sunwings. Until of course it came out that Sunwing was not doing anything illegal....then the tact changed.
I have no problem with someone fighting for the rights of Canadians.. But I do have a problem with someone pretending to do it when their real purpose is to represent their company. And yes, I am comfortable that , initially, that was the case. Pilots were sucked in to the glorious clause of eliminating the foreign interlopers. If you believe the ends justify the means, then so be it. But allow others their opinions without the venom spewed by those who dared to disagree with Mr Hs assertion that what Sunwing was doing was illegal.
BTW...I also work and fly outside Canada...but I bare no malice towards the foreigners flying in Canada as I would like to think the nationals where I work will not bare malice towards me. I believe that the Sunwing program, in the long term, will result in more Canadian pilots being hired than if they did not go this route with their business development. Ergo, if one is really concerned about Canadian jobs for Canadians, then this should be welcome. But if someone is only concerned about jobs at his company which is taking a beating as a result, and is unable to think in a time reference of more than one year, then of course, attack Sunwings. And get the howling mob to back you up...
Also, there are some good people out there trying to make certain the playing field in Canada is level..no self promotion.. No posts saying "just watch me". No throwing mud against the wall to see if some will stick.. And no recognition. And worse, in my opinion, is someone jumping to the head of the parade to take credit for anything they accomplish.
My rant for the evening

Pretty sure you didn't. If it was Lufthansa that did it, no one would even think anything of it. It's because all the bad rap that SW/CJ is taking among the pilot community that anyone would even pay attention to it. I said I had to chuckle because I could imagine that if their were any anti temporary foreign worker pilots watching this I could imagine what would be coming out of their mouth. As for the simple mistake, I suppose I should have clarified about that. Correct me and the information I received but I was told the SW foreign pilots work together. There aren't any that are pairing with Canadians. It would be a guess but I could imagine some of these paired pilots have no experience flying over here and down in the Caribbean. If that is the case I could see concern for safety there. BUT, and read this properly, it is my mistake and apologize if my guesses are incorrect based on the information that was given to me. Spelled out better now? Cause I had to laugh when the racism thing came up.

Yep, it would be a guess. But it did allow you then to imagine on the basis of your guess, be it right or wrong. And then talk about a concern for safety... Definitely a safety issue based on your guess and imagination.
Like Krimson, I am pretty sure we did get it.

Well an educated guess to a degree anyway. I was assuming they didn't have experience here because you can't turn right off of rwy 06's and expect to go anywhere unless you plan on taxiing down the 401.

I think turning left from 24 would get you that 401 taxi, no? A right turn would put you onto the 407, assuming you avoided Derry Road (probably a good idea regardless).
