Anybody going to YVR Apr 29th assesment?

I've been monitoring the website pretty closely. I did not see an upcoming assessment at YVR?

I am not sure where you are monitoring but I got a invitation for it late march and I am attending next Tuesday.

They usually update their website for upcoming events:

Its interesting that they're keeping this one under the radar.
Congrats on the invite though! I'm still waiting for an interview invite. Hopefully this is a sign of movement.

Are you waiting for the phone or in person interview?

When did you do your assessment? Are you aiming for IFR or VFR?

It's my understanding that courses for spring are already loaded and no fall schedule is made yet.

I'm waiting for an in person interview. I did my assessment July 2013, phone interview August 2013, and I've been waiting ever since. My target is for the VFR stream. So far I know that there were two VFR courses last year, each in February and October. I am not expecting to hear about another VFR course until about mid summer.

There is one IFR course starting in May but I think the wait list for that one was quite long.

Wow! That is a long wait.. I was under the impression that interviews move quickly if you get the green dots..

Have you called and asked them?

Yeah I was hoping that I could get into the October course last year. My application expires early next year and I'm really hoping that I'll be able to make it. As far as phone inquiries go, its virtually impossible. Nav Can staff rarely disclose their plans so that you don't get your hopes up. I will admit that I check the website everyday Monday to Friday and the wait is driving me a little crazy hahaha.

Very interesting, I am also told that getting a green dot does not mean you are guaranteed the next stage. Meaning, getting a green dot for the phone-interview does not mean you will get a in person interview.

From what I understand, assessment session and phone interview is conducted by a contracted company who passes those applicants and results to NAV Canada, then area training coordinator conducts in person interviews. If they are looking for 4 people for the course and 8 people were found to be successful by the contractor company for the phone interview, then only top 4 might get in-person assessment.. I am not 100% sure..

The interviews aren't conducted by a contracted company, at least not in Ontario. I did my telephone interview last Thursday and am waiting for my green light as well.

As for who gets through, my understanding is that similar to what you said above, if 8 apply and 4 spots are open then the top scorers on both the assessment and interview portion will move on. This isn't to say they won't still do the in person interview with all 8, not too sure. Hoping for my green light soon!

Yes you are right, they no longer use a contractor. One of the controllers I talked to said they did when he got through the application but its changed.. All recruiting process is done by Nav Canada.

I attended the assessment on the 29th. The testing was less stressful than I expected, the only portion of the test I am worried about is the audio section. How do you feel it went?

She told us the pass/fail for the audio test was something like less then 8 correct, so I was pretty confident after that because I answered about 20 questions. Apparently I made it thru!

Overall I think i did pretty decent. Twice I fucked up the order of questions and had to re-arrange the scantron sheet! Which slowed me down on 2 tests for sure. I was going top to bottom, not realizing next questions was to the right, not down. Good thing I caught it within the first page...

I think i did really well on w-sim and the one where we had to match symbols to numbers.. General information was pretty good too..

I am guessing you did not attend the session last week? If you did, how do you know if you made it thru?

And yes, pass mark is quite low for audio, I know a recent trainee who said he only answered 7 questions and he just got his VFR ticket!

I did the exact same thing on the first booklet that we had to write in, luckily I noticed it quickly.

I only managed to answer 7 or 8 of the audio questions before time was up, but I hears a collective sigh from the room when the alarm went off so I'd imagine not many people feel they did well there. I did well on the w-sim, the vocab was the only portion of the test where I had extra time after I finished all of the questions. I feel like I did well on the the rest of the test except for the spatial reasoning.

I would prefer VFR but I will take anything training offer if I get the chance. FSS sounds appealing since I heard you can train to become a VFR or IFR after 3 years.
