Turkish Air Force F-16 landing at RAF Waddington
A flat angle approach to land at RAF Waddington by this F-16 ..... no doubt the spectators off the end of the runway will be telling stories about this one for quite some time.
It reminds me of watching Ormond Haydon-Baille many times at airshows, or when he just generally beating up someplace for entertainment.
No surprise, although it may be argued he was a great "stick and rudder man," and was highly entertaining to watch, he ended up killing himself.

A spanish F-18 made a lower fly-by on a military airport. It was done to amaze military personnel but ended becoming viral on youtube. He didn't think it was going to leak out.

SSH: I keep forgetting - and thanks for remindinghe ended up killing himself
me - that airline pilots live forever.
5% per year, SSH. See "Convergence of the
Central Limit Theorem".
Let me know when you are next going to fly
surface acro, so I can come watch!

I'll be sure to fire off that announcement in the first 5 mail-outs Colonel if I should ever decide at this juncture of my aviation career to join the airshow circuit ..... and golly, I seem to have missed the portion of my post where I wrote that the bane of your existence and subject of constant derision ... (airline pilots) .... live forever.

Re: Turkish Air Force F-16 landing at RAF Waddington
Does anyone else ever get the impression that once uppon a time, many moons ago a 5 year old Colonel Sanders sat one Sunday morning at a table in the diner of a major international airport. An Airline Captain, along with his beautiful cabin crew sat at the table across from him. The colonel was fascinated with this strong, confident man and couldn't help but stare with envy of his starched white shirt with beautiful gold epauellets complete with a set of gold wings glistening in the morning light. The strapping Captain caught the gaze of young Master Sanders. The colonel smiled at the Captain and said "One day, I want to be an Airline Captain just like you."
The Captain stood up, shrugged on his uniform tunic, straightened his captain hat and walked over to young Colonel's table. He unzipped his fly, whipped out his sidestick, urinated in the colonel's cornflakes, stirred it, zipped back up, picked up his leather flight case and walked away without saying a single word. Thus the the vandetta began...

Ok, ok - Harrumph!
PS The day you can fly as well as a 17 year old,
you get my respect:

In the mean time, I am happy that you find watching
an autopilot flying straight and level, over a route you
have flown many times before, so intellectually challenging
and satisfying. That makes you the King of Aviation.

Re: Turkish Air Force F-16 landing at RAF Waddington
Aside from the large number of them that kill themselves, I have come to the conclusion that the greatest danger to the treasured warbirds that we still have is the aerobatic pilot.
The aerobatic pilot has crashed countless numbers of them. No doubt each one overconfident of his capabilities. Every year, year after year we lose these wonderful machines. I'm really not overly concerned about the pilot loss as it is a calculated risk but the warbird loss is immeasurable. Stick to the aerobatic planes. They can be manufactured again.
If these aircraft were restricted to the airline pilot, the aircraft count would be much higher. Better to see a nice max 30 bank degree low and over rather than the frequent crumpled, smoking wreck courtesy of the aerobatic pilot.

You almost got that right.
The biggest threat to warbirds is when airline
pilots in flight suits try to exceed 30 degrees
of bank.

Re: Turkish Air Force F-16 landing at RAF Waddington
While there no doubt have been cases where buddy airline pilot got his aerobatic training and then destroyed an aircraft, your statement is of course untrue. Denial is the first problem.
Last year we had the pleasure of having Howard Pardue destroy an extremely rare Beacat and Bob Odegaard destroy an extremely rare Super Corsair.
Why, because they had the stupidity to say "hey, lets try some low level aerobatics" when in fact they obviously had no clue what they were doing. If I had been flying those machines, they would still exist. But instead, they got into the hands of some supposedly well respected aerobatic guys. One ex fighter jock/Reno racer super hero and the other perhaps a super agpilot type.
Both real geniuses with no airline background.
Do us a favour and keep the Darwin award winning crashes to the easily replaceable aerobatic aircraft. There are too many of them to count.
Leave the warbirds stuff to responsible and cautious pilots restricted to 30 degrees bank.

Re: Turkish Air Force F-16 landing at RAF Waddington
God forbid, Colonel that your son augers in one day doing the low level acro that you give so much respect. Would you still respect his flying skills after an incident like that? If you had to bail out and wrecked your plane because of something you did wrong, would you respect yourself?Colonel Sanders wrote:PS The day you can fly as well as a 17 year old, you get my respect
I think you have to realize it's not the world against aerobatic pilots. The OP was just making a point that none of us are invincible. He even said he was a "great stick and rudder man," but was just pointing out that it was no surprise (statistically speaking for aerobatic pilots pushing the envelope compared to the average) that he ended up dying doing what he loved. Not every time that someone includes aerobatics and some perceived threat against the man/vocation in the same sentence do you need to come to the rescue and berate others who fly straight and level for a living. We are all pilots just the same. Some wear flight suits, some wear white shirts and epaulettes... Let's get on the same team here.

Not everybody get lucky enough to be born with a golden spoon and/or in a family with strong background in aviation.
You need either one to achieve that.
I am happy that your son got the two and I hope he realize it.
Same story here:

Talented kid, no doubt. Just born with a huge head start that not everybody get the chance to have.

How did Sammy Mason get to be my son?!
You four-bars are real 20-watters.

I had a discussion like this with Brian Jenson

I think he was saying that it applies to your son as well as Sammy Mason.Colonel Sanders wrote:How did Sammy Mason get to be my son?!

I spent a little time yesterday trying to figure out how that Jack Wiegand kid managed to fly around the world in a Mooney Ovation 2. I thought maybe Mooney had lent him the plane, or perhaps he was a business genius and had made a bunch of money. Turns out it's registered to his Dad's trucking company.

Did you ever have any discussions with:
Fred Cabanas, Eddie Andreini, Tamas Nadas, Charlie Schwenker, Bob Odegaard, Howard Pardue, Kent Pietsch. All non-airline aerobatic geniuses that have trashed aircraft and most are dead since your discussion with M. Jensen. Darwin awards to most.
Wow, you guys are good.

His name was Bryan, not Brian. And he had 15 years of aerobatic experience under his belt.I had a discussion like this with Brian Jenson

I guess failing to mention that helps prove a point, though, right?
And it still leaves him as another 4-bar wannabe, right?

Don't take the Colonel seriously. He excels at many things but humility and social graces aren't among them.

Hey, if you think Brian did a "good job" after
watching that video, sure. It's pretty obvious
what he did. And didn't do.
acro, and I'll come watch.
I flew surface acro twice today. One in an
aircraft type that I've never flown before,
and another flight in formation. You?

Re: Turkish Air Force F-16 landing at RAF Waddington
And you think you're a better pilot than them?
(snort)
You could never achieve 1% of what they did
in an airplane. Heck, according to you, the
best pilot is the one that's never flown an
airplane.
In mathematics, we refer to you as the "trivial
solution". A matrix full of zeroes.
To compare them to Brian Jenson, the four-bars
who couldn't recover from a spin, is hilariously ignorant.

Wow. These things always turn into penis measuring contests. I don't fly low level acro. No interest. I don't see the point of risking irreplaceable aircraft to thrill a crowd who on a subconscious level wants to see carnage. Same at the Indy 500, or hockey games for that matter. Let's see BLOOD! Society is made up of sick puppies.

I've stayed out of this one until now, but what in the hell does Plato, a Greek philosopher have to do with a Turkish F-16 making a low landing in England?

I'm happy with my accomplishments in comparison with them thank you very much.
The 1% that I have achieved so far is the 1% that really matters. Not killing or maiming myself or trashing a perfectly good aircraft. You guys can have the 99%.

For the above video link to another aerobatic genius, The National Transportation Safety Board determines the probable cause(s) of this accident to be:
the pilot's failure to maintain an adequate airspeed while maneuvering, which led to a stall/mush condition.
Good Job.
