No fighters for RCAF

C.R. (Buzz) Nixon was deputy minister of National Defence from 1975 to 1983.

And this unelected bureaucrat thinks the RCAF needs no fighter jets...that must mean that the next time Soviet long-range bombers (which have been making more frequent incursions into Canada's ADIZ lately) pierce our airspace, we should give them a hug.....much too Canadian.

Personally, I think the money would be better spent building a world class coast guard. Fighter jets do appeal more to our collective egos, and that's a fact.

Will they be armed? Will they be unionized like the current Canadian Coast Guard is?
What could or would they do if they encounter the Russian Navy escorting ships through the Canadian territorial waters. Friendly waves of course, we're Canadians after all.

I'm air force but I think the Royal Canadian Navy should be strengthened to a respectable level that ensures they can carry out any mission they are tasked with.

We need a carrier!

I remember when the gummit was talking about replaceing tanks with those 105mm. upgunned LAVs....forget what they were actually called...but some military guys were telling me that the worst part of that idea was how quickly our military would lose the actual skill sets required to use,fight and maintain tanks should we ever have been required to re-equip and use them in the future if we had gotten rid of them. It was something like within 5 years of loseing the tanks we would have lost enough skill sets and experienced men and officers to other jobs within the military as well as retirements,death and illness that it would take something like at least 10 years to rebuild just those skills....after getting tanks to actually use. Seems to me that that same scenario would play out if you get rid of the fighters.
