Sad news for Mr. Olesen and his family. He had himself a nice little spot there that he painstakingly built over the years. Always enjoyed stopping in for coffee, and admiring his pioneering lifestyle.

Very sad. My home is close to the bush. I have a Honda pump and enough sweating hose to supply my four sprinklers with enough water to keep the house soaked and the surrounding bush wet. Also there are no overhanging branches that can fall on the house if they were to burn.
I can set up the pump, run the hoses in a matter of minutes. All I need to do (it'll never be needed because it's there) is sit on the dock and keep the pump full of gas.
Have to wonder why someone living in a home like his, didn't have a sprinkler system ready to go? Pretty simple cure. Wooden home in the forest, and all.

Fortunate to have met Dave a few times flying in the Nahanni. So unfortunate about his family's loss. From what I gather from this oak, he'll prevail.

He did have a sprinkler system set up by the gov. after the fire started. 80 km winds and a big fire are hard to slow down with a sprinkler.
A huge loss for a great family.
