I think the Chinese were just answering to.... "P-8 was conducting routine surveillance when the Chinese Su-27 interceptor carried out a barrel roll over the U.S. plane."

Sounds like a near approach to this incident, except with a more modern aircraft.

Both Russia and China have engaged in provocative close encounters
that reflect their political message.

^Ahh, negative, Ghostrider! The Chinese own a significant portion of the US's debt. The question can then be fairly asked - "who owns whom?"

Name one country that doesn't when their airspace is penetrated by an enemy.

Sounds like the US is provoking and harassing by constantly flying along and frequently into their territorial airspace and waters…

Were they keeping up foreign relations?

You know… the finger?

sorry.. I hate it when it does that

Hell... it would be the highlight of my day if a Su-27 barrel rolled over me in cruise. What a beautiful machine!

Looking at the pictures, I don't think it was a SU-27.

They were flying in international airspace. Intercepting is fine I guess but flying within 30 feet is not.

The Chinese call it a J-11 but it is definitely a Flanker.

Intercepting is fine I guess but flying within 30 feet is not
USN Rear Admiral Paul Gilchrist (ret'd) states
in his biography, "Feet Wet", that he put his
vertical fin within 18 inches (as calcuated by
photo analysts) of a Soviet "Bear" that he
intercepted.

I presume that what is sauce for the Goose,
is not sauce for the Gander?

PS Like the double "Top Gun" pun?

PPS The internet is funny. If it didn't happen
within the last six months, it never happened.

J-11 and SU-27s are two very different machines!

Because aome US pilot did the same 20 years ago doesn't make what the chinese pilot did recently, especially with the Hainan island context..

Please explain because from what I know the J-11 is the Chinese equivalent of the Russian Su-27S.

Regardless, from the photos shown, the jet that played with the P-8 was most definitely a "Flanker".

The J-11/A/B is an indigenous copy of the SU-27SK. It looks like a SU-27, and it is called a Flanker, but the insides are much different and the outsides are slightly different.

Ok... you were talking finer details. :) I know the Su-27SM is a multi-role strike fighter with a glass cockpit but don't know much about the J-11 avionics/radar suite. BTW, the "K" in "SK" designates that it's a export variant.
