Aviation Summer Co-op
Hello all,
Long time lurker, first time poster. Coming to you guys asking for some advice.
I'm a first year student in the Georgian College Aviation Management program in Barrie. I've always had an interest in the aviation field, but unlike many I have more of an interest in the day to day operations of airports and airlines.
The Georgian program has a mandatory Co-op aspect over the summer (May-August) and I want to get involved in the day to day operations (business side) of airports and airlines.
I come to you as I have no idea how or where to get started in terms of available positions / airports or airlines that hire students. I want to get started now and start building contacts to ensure I find a position.
I have no problem travelling, and am more than willing to travel internationally if the right opportunity presented itself.
Does anyone have any ideas for me, it would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks,
James

Why not start with Air Georgian? I know they have a summer co-op position as a dispatch assitent where your duties are but not limited to, driving the crews back and forth from the north end to the terminal and preparing lunches and general office duties. Other than that in YYZ, not sure, hopefully others can help ya more.

Not sure if Kitchener (YKF) still has openings for summer students.
I know that they took in summer students back in 2006, not sure if they've kept up the practice.
C.R. in administration is a Georgian Aviation Management Grad, so that might help your chances.

I've been through that program and it's great that you're actually trying to gain from this experience. Some of my friends just worked as air side security and wasted those 3 co-op periods. Personally I worked as an operational support specialist (air traffic assistant). In YYZ and overseas. That position doesn't exist anymore as many of it is automated.
I highly recommend calling nav canada and seeing what postings they have for co-op students.
The GTAA was a popular destination for my classmates. The good thing there is that you can make contacts and come back for the other two co-op terms if you wish. And many also worked there once they graduated. Bad thing is that it's a huge machine and you'll be just another number in there and may not see the hands on experience that you'd like.
I also recommend calling up the Peterborough airport and ask for the manager. He's a Georgian grad. He did his co-op in YPQ and I believe he's the manager now. It's an excellent airport where you can see the day to day operations.
