Sloppy pilot.

Post by dukepoint »

Unbelievable.......

I was blown away two days ago. A fairly tall, dark haired Captain deadheaded on a flight out of Toronto to another Canadian destination. He had an untrimmed shoddy looking week old beard, his tie was very loose, and his shirt was untucked and hanging half out. It was the most shody public display I've ever seen in near 30 years of flying. He was wearing silver Captain's epalates. Didn't get the airline......thank god. It was horrible. What's happening to us?

Maybe he was just trying to blend in with all the pax wearing sweatpants and flip flops.

In all seriousness though, I'm sure you just caught someone on a bad day (hopefully).

Our old crew bus driver used to put on a pilot's uniform and hang around the bars trying to impress the chicks.(This boy had problems...) Are you sure it wasn't him?

Problem is, everyone is complaining about wages and the "race to the bottom".......... In aviation presentation is everything. Want to be treated and paid like a professional, start with the image. This sloppy dude is doing every one of us a huge disservice and will be remembered by everyone who saw him. What's with this beard thing anyway?

Presentation is everything?????
Getting home safe is everything, the rest is horseshit.
Probably was that guy who used to put the priest robes on and "have a go at himself" mid flight....

#37,

Getting home safe IS everything. The problem is only you and I know that. Joe public sees shiz like that and immediately raises an eyebrow. I agree with the previous statement. I rarely commute in uniform. If I do it's because I'm fresh off a flight or won't have time to change before my next one. When I'm in uniform I make sure to represent my company in a professional manner. That means my tie is straight, my shirt is tucked, and my beard is trimmed. If you don't want to wear the tie and tuck your shiz in, you're roller bag is in your hand and the bathroom is 30 feet away.

While I totally see point of company and self representation, this is an example of judgement without context or repercussions on an Internet forum.
Reading this, my first thought was sympathy, maybe this poor guy just had the worst week of his life. Wife left, spent two days drinking, who knows.

Ever had a bad day and looked liked shit?

I have no idea what the actual subject was about, and I'm not defending a guy who possibly is just a slob, but ya can't jump to conclusions all the time. C'mon. Ya never know.

To the original poster, you saw him and obviously in the best position to observe his demeanor and all that. Sucks if he just lost his conviction as a professional.

He might have just finished a 5 leg all night flight across the country and was deadheading home...maybe the public should see what pilots look like after a "legal" duty day?

Aztec or 777 pilot, if you have pride, dress correctly and respect your uniform.
I always make sure I look great when I go to work, because I respect the company I work for and the profession I represent.

If you can't take 10 minutes of your time to shave and iron your uniform, maybe you need straighten yourself.

Just get home safe. Pride in how you look is lame lame lame. Most people get over it shortly after high school. Your skill your abilities your training your experience are not represented by a cheap, Ill fitting sweatshop made fashion no no. They are not represented by a stroke of a razor... good grief. Just make it home safe.

While I agree flying safe is the most important task. If you can't "multi-task" and look respectable doing it, this profession is not for you. You won't get very far.

Nobody is suggesting you are a worse pilot if you look like a hobo. But passengers will absolutely judge your ability to fly the plane based on how you look, since that is the only thing they know about you. I believe most here would agree, besides representing your profession, you have a duty to instill confidence.

In my experience around airports as a passenger, 99.99% of the flight crews at all airlines I notice, take pride in his/her appearance as a professional(which they are). On a very rare occasion I do see a guy(note male) who appeared to have slept in his uniform for a few days and/or came off a heavy "night" on the town.

It's true that people do judge by appearance, shallow fools that people are. But to think that the vast, critical mass of pax flying care about anything more than the price of their ticket is to grossly overestimate one's importance. Sad but true.

Pilots judging other pilot's appearance? What are we, women checking out each other's shoes?

This could be me on a bad day in Gatwick:

No you are right I won't do very well...
you sound like you are far superior to the "bush" guys, tell us how the tucked in shirt makes it so, really, I'm very interested, perhaps it will help my stalled out career...

Oh PS, some airline guy told me about some nasa study that concluded nobody can multitask. I know I can't.

If he was a pilot in a pilot uniform I can assure you it's written in his SOP's that his appearance reflects the company and greatly influences the confidence of the customer. He is to maintain his hygiene, grooming and uniform accordingly. These are not difficult things to do, and they are part of his employers standard operating procedures. He doesn't get to choose which SOP's he likes, and which he doesn't. He's paid to conduct himself according to what his employer demands. It's either too much of a burden on him to uphold a small detail which he agreed to do in his employment contract, or he is incredibly selfish and doesn't care what the company or his customers think. Either way, do you want him flying your airplane?

Ask any true professional, be it in business, athletics or the arts, details matter.

you mean try and keep the POS VFSolutions garbage from falling apart during your 20 day month of 11-14 hr days, of which they give you 2 pair pants, " your bag falling out after 6 months, 4 shirts frayed and yellowed or falling apart from use of bleach, and the Jacket which frays at the collar cuffs. Or the quality leather belt that tears apart to reveal cardboard inside.

Because most guys I know don't make enough to afford the 15$/pair for drycleaning weekly. In other News Calin R. doubled his pay in 2012, and made over 9m in 2013.

Good grief cry me a river.

Duke Point sees an untucked shirt, cries about it on avcanada.

While I agree anyone in uniform should look professional, I'm not sure crying about it on a public forum is really a solution. You're responses to a few of the posters here make it sound like you think you're above some people. You're telling me in your 30 years of flying you've NEVER looked a little worn out? Never had an untucked shirt? Never forgotten a razor? Never forgotten a toothbrush? Etc etc.

If you answer yes that you've looked and acted perfect all 30 years, you're full of it. What do you think you're contributing here? Spreading tucked shirt awareness? Slow day in the life of the DP?

Just ask the front desk for a toothbrush or razor.
