New W-T-M Routes/Procedures

Post by jump154 »

With the new routes and procedures coming into force on Nov 13th, being a major update, how is the changeover managed from NAV Canada's point of view? What happens at 0000Z on the 13th?

Do aircraft who already have clearances keep going as normal, or are they re-assigned a new SID/STAR?
Is there a time when there is a mixture of both old and new procedures happening at the same time?

An enroute controller will ask an aircraft if they are able to fly the new arrival if they filed the old one, or the reverse (they filed the new one too early).

The aircraft airborne at the time of pub change may not have the new fixes, STARS, etc. They would either get vectors and extra altitude assignments, or they continue to fly the old STAR. The Controllers would be briefed on the relevant differences and protect for both if necessary. For major changes the controllers would receive some Simulator time to see the new routes in action. Data and radarscreen overlays would be preloaded into a selectable overlay option.

There would be extra staffing for the affected sectors for increased workload in the first few days. After 1 day, 90%+ of the airlines should have the new procedures in their databases.

The change over of Nav Data and Instrument Departures and Arrivals all takes place at 0901z.

Hydro, thanks, that makes sense.

For the other 2,
PEDANT. A pedant is a person who is excessively concerned with formalism, accuracy & precision, or who makes an ostentatious and arrogant show of learning.

In aviation, details are often important. Might be a good idea to thank people trying to educate you on those details rather than insulting them.

Nothing pedantic about pointing out that 0000Z is not the time that the WTM changeover is happening. From a terminal standpoint it would be a bit of a mess if this was the perceived changeover point.
The answer Hydro gave fills you in on the details of how the changeover is occuring...but I as a controller would have the alarm bells ringing if a pilot was asking me about "0000Z". Nothing pedantic about confirming the actual time.

ATC and Pilots are the biggest pedants out there...usually because we have to be.

Yep, I'm sorry -- just when writing the post I did not have access to the new plates - should have just said "at the changeover time". Still -- the correction in time could have been presented better than "nothing for 9 hours after that" followed by no further information.

I learned what I was interested in!
