Re: Is there any job outside of tech that doesn't pay minimum wage to start
I am a tech worker who, short years ago, considered a career as a pilot. As a pilot not only would I be able to see the difference I make every day, but being willing to move and work anywhere, I could write my own ticket (pre-covid with that pilot shortage). As a "tech worker", yes, I can command a...

Re: need help converting a pdf to google calendar
As far as I know, there are no automated tools for this. The last time I ran into this was I think 5 years ago and there certainly wasn't anything available at the time that I could find. PDFs simply don't have the necessary data structure to automate this. Probably because it's far, far simpler to ...

I still believe in life jackets though! As my instructor taught me, having trained out of YTZ in winter... there's nothing down there but drowning. Would I wear one at the soaring club, with nothing but flat fields around? No. Would I wear one over water, with nothing but drowning around? Ye...

Re: Feels like impossible to find an entry level pilot job...
I hate to say it, but it seems like you've answered all your own questions, picked a path, and the results have spoken for themselves. You've gotta remember, an employer hires you for their benefit, not yours. A business doesn't run itself. Part of what Bede is saying is to be present and genuine. ...

Re: Feels like impossible to find an entry level pilot job...
When you apply, figure out why you want to work for THAT company. Pay particular attention to the flying they do and why that appeals to you. Useless advice (sorry Bede). It has nothing to do with the individual company. When you're using the shotgun approach, you simply don't have time to figure t...

make mental note of that prior to departure. How do you suggest one does this? Contact farmers in the area to see what crops they planted? Can't use google earth, because that info is years out of date. Drive the whole route and look for suitable fields every 2 miles? I believe he was referring to ...

Re: Aviation Watch Recommendations
I stopped wearing a watch once I started flying airplanes with clocks. I started wearing a watch flying when my instructor's plane's chronometer broke. All airplanes have clocks - but a lot of those clocks happen to be watches or cellphones. The clock is the last thing to get fixed, in any small ai...

I'll just put this out there... someone above mentioned how as a pilot you will be beholden to, and forever living in fear of, your medical.

Re: Aviation Watch Recommendations
Well, the apple watch does have a mickey mouse watch face. And Mickey even says it out loud sometimes. How cool is that? Though I suppose no one may recognize you as a pilot with one. It is cool. But don't compare a decent smart watch with Mickey Mouse crap. There's a massive difference between a g...

I use a Timex® Ironman©. No muss, no fuss, it counts seconds with naught but a glance, it's got a stopwatch and a timer. It does everything I need in the air and nothing I don't. But, I'm not a sucker for gimmicks. If I was, I'd probably go with a Garmin, because I'm already invested in Garmin for m...

I can second (or is it third?) Alec. He's not cheap, but he's worth every penny. See, nobody will care where you got your PPL, once you have a thousand hours under your belt, so don't count on that. But he'll make you a better pilot than most anywhere I can think of. I think the thing that separates...

Re: You can't tell snow depth from the air
I can't say I have heard of what must be deep snow on a grass runway being compressed by heavy equipment for wheel operations. It sounds kind of risky. I know an airport which did this years back. Mostly for skiplanes, though some very skilled wheel pilots used the compressed runway. It's a poor id...

For anyone condoning the actions of these boors… Would that be acceptable behaviour on a city bus, rapid transit, VIA train, taxi cab, Greyhound bus, etc. CSM If I chartered it - yes, perhaps it would be. $300, ish. A bit pricey but my CAME is a 10 minute walk, across the street from my house, so I let it slide on account of how convenient his office is.

Learn what a gas cap costs. On a recent lesson, I forgot to tighten a gas cap during the preflight, as we were refueling at that exact moment. I didn't tighten it down, and somewhere on the second circuit, I noticed that stream of avgas spilling from the wing. After calling tower, we did get that ga...

Re: Future of 100LL
I have an old car that loves the 100LL as well. The big problem with automotive gas is the ethanol they put in it. It goes bad after a few months whereas 100LL lasts much longer. Funny you should say that. We run avgas in the weed whackers and lawn mowers before we shut down for winter - specifical...

Re: Future of 100LL
Engines run fine without lead (possibly with some modifications). I don't think that's up for debate. Sometimes I run avgas through my boat engine before winter, and I can see (and smell) the difference in the spring. But what about all those engines made in the 60s, designed to run with lead, and t...

Re: Lighten That Nosewheel
Isn't lowering the nose just as effective? It's my understanding that shimmy happens when a fine balance between nosewheel pressure, friction, speed, nosewheel angle and side load is reached. Changing any of those values could stop shimmy. You may be right - but reducing the weight on the nosewheel...

Re: help understanding airspaces
Another distinction would be that not all class D control zones are transponder airspace, whereas all class C zones are. Without primary radar or a transponder I assume traffic separation becomes more difficult for ATC, and hence why conflict resolution is "workload permitting". it would've made a l...
