Retirement——- Flying Job
Hello to all of you that read this and maybe I can get some ideas and thoughts .
I’ll be retiring from my non-flying aviation (airline) job working for more than 30 years and trying to revive my flying job prospects in hoping to continue flying for a little while longer.
Retirement is about 4 months away and acquaintances that I know have told me to apply for a flying position “now!” as we know the shortage situation. I’ve scheduled to rewrite my IATRA next week as the one i wrote years ago expired .
Should I shoot resumes now and see what happens or wait till I’m retired 4 months away?
Thank you and hopefully I’ll get some good advice from all of you.
Fly safe!!

Re: Retirement——- Flying Job
First of all, congratulations on retirement! So, you'll probably get a really vague answer here (if any at all) based on your original post. There's a lot of variables that would affect whether or not one might recommend you to start applying. I'm not sure your situation, so please don't take offence if my questions seem obvious/basic. But some info that would affect that decision includes: Do you hold a CPL (I'm assuming you do), do you have a valid Cat 1 Medical (again, I'm assuming you do), do you meet the recency requirements (and is your ADB valid or expired?). Lots of things to consider. Also, since you are writing the IATRA, I assume you don't have an ATPL (so probably less than 1500hr TT)?
Based on these assumptions (CPL, Valid Cat 1 Medical, Valid License/Recency/ADB, No ATPL, less than or around 1500hr TT), you may want to consider the quality of life you'll have in 'retirement'. Most jobs in that experience level will be either fairly demanding from a time perspective, or not super flexible from a lifestyle perspective. But if you just have the itch to get flying again, go for it!

Buy your own plane (certified or ultralight or homebuilt... ) and have fun. Entry level jobs are rarely lifestyle and body friendly.
As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

I think I would apply now. It might take a bit of time to find the job you really want to do.
And if flying for you is something you always wanted to do, I will go 100% in it and have fun !

Without knowing what type of jobs you’re aiming for, your friends are right. Start applying, but note your time line of when you can start. May not hearing anything right away due to 4 month notice, so update the application a month or two away from when you can start as well. Hopefully the flying job will be one where you can enjoy your deserved retirement. Good luck.
