I have driven a truck intercity for a global courier company. It is for the most part dull work with no room for advancement. If you have to unload your own truck it really sucks. If your truck doesn't have a/c or cloth seats then life get really bad. The skill level to drive a truck is far below that required to fly any larger aircraft. I have done that to. Given the choice between big rigs and big planes, the plane wins everytime for me.
Truck driving is an awesome job. You get payed to see the country and meet the people. What do we get to do as pilots, the pinacle is to get to the top and fly the big iron,whats the draw to sit there for 12 hours at a stretch at night with absolutly nothing to see. I think its the stigma more than the actual job that makes people want to be airline bound. Its not fun flying.Truck driving is fun, sitting doing nothing but watching an autopilot isnt.
0.3$ an hour, how do you make money?.and why should I work more than 8h/day?after 8h, it i start to be unhealthy(for my french mentality).
60miles/hx8h=480 miles
480x0.3=144$/day
144$x22=3168$month
3168-30%(taxe)=2217$
2200$/month to sleep in the truck and eat fast food, wooow!!!
still, can be a fun job for 1-2 years.

So, I take it you have done both? Drove truck for a living, and flown the "big iron"?stratcat wrote:Truck driving is an awesome job. You get payed to see the country and meet the people. Comparing truck driving to a real airline job has to be one of the more retarded comparisons ever made. (With apologies to any retarded folks reading this.)
I’m still waiting for my white male privilege membership card. Must have gotten lost in the mail.
Last trucking job I had i made 1300 a trip, 4 trips a month=5200 a month. pickups and deliveries were 10 bucks a piece,average 15 per trip=150.00. You can chose how much you wanted to work, if you wanted 50 trips a year thats over 70000 a year. Now the cons,not home much,living in the truck 5 days a week. Pros good money,little BS,left alone to do your job,good people out on the road. Getting paid to see the country.

Trucking eh?? Take the Kenworth your better off. Just left on trucking job for another. New one 27 per hour, union, payed vaction, 10 hour shifts, 3 days off a week. Yet I would still give my left nut to be in a clapped out C180 making $2000/month.
Just remember the stereotype in your head when you see a trucker jumping out of his/her truck. Most of the public has that same thought.
A kid that jumps out of the ol 180 has a better public image. It's not all that great of a job. 30 below wondering where that chain wrench is, wondering when you'll be home next. Wondering what goddamn idiot would try to throw stuff that high on a flat deck.
Trucking ain't what it is cracked up to be. Showering in dirty showers, have "new canadians" and "4 wheelers" try to cut you off and such.
Nope, stay flying and be happy, it might not make you rich but if you love it that much it's better than the alternative.

Yup, I did it and I'll probably do it again.
The way I see it, the pilot, aircraft mechanic, and truck driver, as well as the welfare recipient up north are all equally important: The plane doesn't fly if the mechanic doesn't fix it. The plane won't fly if the truck driver doesn't bring the freight, and the plane doesn't need to fly if a welfare bum producing unwanted children doesn't need the pampers the plane is loaded with...
