Confederation or Sault College?

Post by CYQT »

Hey guys, I'll be applying to college in a few short weeks, and im having alot of trouble deciding between these two schools. These are the only two im interested in, so dont try to lean me towards Seneca or anything like that lol. Just answer the poll and state your reason why you feel this way. That would be very appreciated. Thanks.

Apply to both, decide later.

If ya wanna go floats, go Confed.

If ya wanna go airline, go Sault.

he means that sault is geared more towards airline flying, and confed is geared more towards bush/floats. But you can go to both colleges and have the same long term goals... IMO.

Years ago the argument was "don't bother with the multi-IFR; it will expire before you get a job that requires it." (ie instruct for 2 years, or ramp for 2 years) This is absolutely NOT the case anymore. As ISTP mentioned it depends what job you're looking for out of graduation. If you're looking for a multi-turbine gig, for most entry level jobs the float rating may or may not help, but the MIFR is a must.

Either place you go you can do whatever you want. Floats, Bush, Instructor, Airline. With the one year extra you have at Confed you can go out and do your MIFR, or go to work dock right away. I've seen guys get on floats right away after Confed (dont know how much he sucked).
With Soo, a few of the guys do their instructor rating during the transition from second year to third year. Others just have a good time because they are young and dont want to be 30 and look back and say "I didn't have enough keg parties in College".

From what I know, both courses are pretty good. I went to Soo. Feel pretty comfortable coming out of there. You will only get as much as you put in though. And you might have a better possibility of going to Jazz. I personally believe they should put a requirement that you are not a douche/virgin before you go there. So many flight attendants... oh well.

Confed sounds pretty cool with the floats and stuff. Sault, you will never forget the zlin.

My advice would be not to rush through life.

Oh.. and Soo teaches you such things as the difference between "then" and "than". And "there" and "their" and "they're".

all the good stuff

sault will give you the thickest skin and will allow you to take all the BS you are sure to encounter in the working world in stride.

more of a building character thing than anything IMHO

Confederation is shorter, however you don't have your IFR rating but an IFR rating once you have your private license i believe the course is one week but compared to the year you save in money and one year extra out maybe bush flying building hours and earning money, id say its worth it.

Let me put it to you this way;
If you want to have a good time, have the best 2 1/2 yr experience of your aviation career + get a diploma and CPL (with floats), I highly recommend Confed.

Having attended both Colleges, I found Confed to be night & day compared to Sault.

Even though I have my float rating, I have taken a different route and am currently an Instructor, so for some people to say "if you want bush flying head to Confed, if you want airline head to Sault", I dissagree.

If you're undecided on either or, try Sault for the 1st semester (seeing as you don't fly, you can attend Confed the following year if you aren't keen on continuing into 2nd semester).

Would you ever consider upgrading your diploma to a degree down the road? One other ace up your sleeve coming out of Sault is the articulation between Algoma as well as Embry Riddle. Coming out of the Sault you have a 3-year technology diploma and could complete a university degree in as little as a year. I believe Confed only gives you a 2-year arts/science type diploma. Just a thought.

Yeh but that degree thing is a bunch of bull... Wheres the time for partying? They just jammed in a bunch more courses into the stressful life of a sault college student... and made you an Algoma student.
Embrey Riddle sounds great and all... but you rarely see people going there just for the fact that its amazingly expensive.

And yeh... I like that one post... Soo gets you tough... Like... Calluses on your inner thighs tough... Dont drop the soap.

Confed used to have (10+ yrs ago) a similar arrangement with UND and ER, although I don't personally know of anyone who has ever pursued that route. Sault would obviously get more advanced standing as it's a longer program.

Confed vs Sault...

In any event, if you want multi IFR (with some aero trg to boot) go Sault. If you want to be into the work force quicker (with 25 hrs of floats to boot) go Confed. If you want multi IFR and to be in the workforce quickly, spend the cash and go to a flight club. IMO it'd be ludicrous to spend the money yourself given the fact that the flight training is available for free. If you find yourself resistant to leave the GTA you should forget about flying, get an MBA and own every punk on this forum.

Here we go again! ISTP there are probably as many Confed grads flying for AC as there is Sault grads and the same goes for WestJet.

Saying one program will get you to AC quicker over the other is pure crap!!

One big thing to know is that at Sault College you have to wait 1 full semester to start flying - it's like a "weeding out process". The course load is quite full during that time, but in the end that's how they see who's ready for aviation. I believe Confed, you go straight to flying in the first semester. (not sure on that last one)

Another point, said often here, is sault will give you a Group 1, Confed will give ya floats. Oh, and you do get 3 hours of "aerobatic training"... first is an hour of spins, second is an hour of emergencies and what to do when something very wierd happens, and the third is entry and recovery of aerobatics... not an aerobatic course, but at least some things to look forward in our zlins.

by the way, I'm in 3rd year at Sault now, so if anyone has Q's, just send me a pm!

You're absolutely right, CLguy. How quick someone gets into AC has a lot to do with how hungry the pilot is to get there, and mostly luck.

It's my opinion that Sault gives a little more airline-type background than Confed (from what I've read here and heard through the grapevine) SOPs, discipline, tying a tie- all that BS.

By the time a Confed grad gets to AC, the pilot has been exposed to that stuff in the workplace, so they do as well as the Sault grad.

I just think that if one goes to Sault, they have a bit more airline-type stuff in their system, and it could provide motivation or just the slightest edge over someone else who hasn't been exposed to it.

Both schools are good, and as far as I know, their diplomas are equally weighted with Seneca when applying at Big Red.

So there's ISTP's views on the matter.

My $0.02.

I agree in the most part, except that:

SOP's are presented by the faculty, but enforced by students by the way of a monetary "rumble" system

Oh, and I'm in my 3rd year and I still dont know how to tie a windsor tie LOL

Man that has to be the most f***ing arrogant statement I have read on this site. You Soo guys are starting to sound more like a Seneca grad everyday.

OK all you Confed guys make sure you take Tie Tying 101 and study hard so you can be as good as a Sault grad some day. What the f*** do you think they teach students at Confed. I know for sure it isn't tie tying but they do understand discipline and SOP's. Time to climb off that big white horse you seem to be sitting on!!!
