American STC's on a Canadian plane.

Post by rengler »

Just wondering if an STC that has been approved by the FAA needs to be approved by Transport Canada to be used on a Canadian registered plane. For example, Trimmer Aviation in Alaska has an STC that I am interested in to install Supercub gear on my Tri-pacer to convert it to a taildragger. Can I have this STC installed on a Canadian registered plane?

http://trimmeraviation.com/gear.html

Thanks
Randy

Hi Rengler. The STC has to be approved by Transport before you get it installed. Speaking from experience.

Start reading here:

http://www.tc.gc.ca/civilaviation/certi ... 3_app1.htm

See:
APPENDIX D
Letter Format - Acceptance of FAA STC
(refer to section 5.2.3)

[Address of holder]

Subject: Acceptance of Foreign STC ###

This is in response to your letter dated YYYY/MM/DD, requesting Transport Canada approval of the subject STC.

In accordance with our current policy associated with the review of foreign STCs, some STCs applicable to certain categories of aircraft may be accepted solely on the basis of their foreign certification, and do not require the issue of a corresponding certificate by Transport Canada. The subject STC falls within these criteria.

This STC will be entered in the national index of STCs that have been reviewed and accepted by Transport Canada for installation on Canadian-registered aeronautical products.

This letter confirms formal acceptance of the referenced STC by Transport Canada.

I work on private "cub" type aircraft all the time (last 20 years) and install many FAA STC's on them. TC has never rejected any. Don't ask, just do it and submit the major mod/ repair report.

I was under the impression that the country or state governing authority of the aircraft approves the STC. So if a cessna stc is approved in the u.s it can be used here.
