Volunteer eh?

Pretty much any small company will take a volunteer, just send out letters to the companies you want to volunteer at and even knock on some doors, it won't hurt at all and only cost you a little bit of free time. Along with the letter you'll write, bring your resumé and any other aviation related training documents(or copies) that you posess. Flying clubs and other community organisations will be able to help you out too.

Good luck

you better not be a college grad doing this.

AMEs and apprentices do not work for free.

If you are a highschool student looking for experience to decide if you want to do this as a career fine. But we are not like pilots begging to get into the industry.

If you are a grad, hit the road and look for work properly.

Sure is - Just go down your local aviation museum and you can work your ass off for as many hours as you would like. There are even flying museums so you are working on certified flying machines under the care and control of a AME.
However - please please please avoid commercial operations.

PITA

PS - the flying museums - they love you until the airshows start and the beer and steaks come out then - then they say "ahh whats your name again?"

I agree....volunteering at an aviation museum is one thing, but volunteering to work at any commercial AMO is a step backwards for all of us.

Thanks to everyone for giving valuable suggestions and information about volunteer apprentice opportunities. Actually with the current job situation it's been very hard for me to find a job as an AME apprentice. However since I wanted to save my career, I was thinking of volunteering so that I could continue being in the aviation industry. Most importantly to get the experience necessary to get the AME licence. Either way if someone knows any aviation industry that is hiring AME apprentices, I would be grateful for any information.

Check out Great Slave Helicopters, they are a large company up north that are currently looking to hire. It's kinda mid season but just keep your head up and you'll have no problem. To get my first apprentice gig, I volunteered for a week during march break and then made myself available on weekends to help them out doing whatever, when I finished school I was offered full time employment. It all payed off in the end as there is no substitute for experience, paid or unpaid. If you want to succeed in life, you have to be hungry and want it more than the next guy because there are a couple hundred other apprenti waiting to take your spot.

Good luck!!!!

The Canadian armed forces is looking for guys. When you're done you have to do six months of civilian stuff before you qualify for your license. Had a cone head buddy who did it, he stuck with them and he's loving it soooooo.... there is always that route. But I have to agree with the nay sayers on this one, don't give it up free to a "for profit" shop. Hell, get a job at a airline chucking bags or taking tickets then go for the maintenance from that route.

Jobs are hard enough to come by,without people giving free labor. Find another solution.

Have some dignity, and don't offer to work for free. Think of it this way - your car does not run on thank you and you can't rent a house/room/cardboard box for free. Find a airline that has its own ground handling company, or a small flight training company that you can work as a ramp attendant, or even an FBO (ie Skyservice) that you might be able to transfer over to the maintenance division if you show your potential as a aircraft fueller. There are enough prostitutes in our industry that you should not have to cheapen and diminish yourself. Besides, there are a lot of companies out there that if you offer to work for free, won't take you up on it (due to the liability), and then when they do have a paying job, you won't be called because he/she tore up your resume as you don't have enough respect for yourself due to the fact you offered to work for nothing. If you are bound and determined on degrading yourself, should you get someone to accept you (remember - you are not hired, as you are not paid) realize that should you get hurt, you don't have any record of employment, so who is going to pay your bills? Medical and therapy as not cheap. If they are willing to have you work for free, you do not want to be there. Period.

Be warned, be informed. Our industry is not worth slavery. Bide your time, and make calls to potential employers at least once a week. Eventually, you will get called for an interview, as they know it is the only way to get you to stop calling.
