You don't have to be smart to be a journalist. They are usually the idiots of the University world, making up crap to fit their view. CBC is a borderline tabloid now.

Unfortunately once this was posted on twitter yesterday the media was all over it. The 149km/h wind reading was taken from the top of the new Bow tower, Calgary's new tallest building. I was watching the live RVR/Wind readings yesterday and there were a few points where the gust was over 50 knots:

I think this was before LH came in. It was pretty neat to see ATC start using 25 for arrivals of airliners, can't even remember the last time I saw that happen.

To come to the defence of the CBC:

Journalists need to familiarize themselves extremely quickly in areas where they have no background in. To the general public, this would look like a crazy landing, with some great footage. That is why they use it.
You don't have to be smart to be a journalist. They are usually the idiots of the University world, making up crap to fit their view. CBC is a borderline tabloid now.
Just to let you know, it's far harder to get into a top Journalism program in University than it is to get into a top aviation management program. Please be more respectful and considerate. It takes hard work, time, and determination to become a journalist; same as a pilot. If you are going to disparage journalists, you might as well do the same to pilots as well.

So please, don't rip on the reporters and journalists. They are just doing their job; same as you.

Besides that, I would have to agree that this was overhyped. To a layman though, this would have been some amazing footage to see, and I think it actually promoted the professionalism and training of pilots. I wouldn't get too worried about this one.

Definitely an interested day at YYC though. Lots of stuff on CADORS. A few overshoots. Heard a few planes giving PIREPS of 60knot winds on short finals.

07/25 has been closed for most of the year due to construction of a new taxiway that runs parallel to 16/34 and "C" taxiway. 25 has been used just as a taxiway. Before it was closed you would see Dash 8s, RJs and 737s, based at the south end, landing on it on a regular basis.

Sure, but there were as many missed approaches in YYC in a half hour as YYT gets planes in an entire day. Matter of perspective, I guess. I thought I'd join the hyperbole bandwagon... Besides, the 90+ kt wind was indeed pertinent, not only because of all the damage it caused to buildings in the downtown core (and elsewhere), but because it was the sudden 35kt windshear (loss) on the approach at 500' AGL that had some pilots crapping themselves (this last fact I'm unable to verify). IIRC, the max wind speed I saw on the anenometer was about 240@46G58. To be honest, the LH crosswind landing was okay but nothing out of the ordinary. As someone else mentioned, ever see old footage of Kai Tak landings?

Did that paper claim they were at the airport? Those winds were reported at the top of the Calgary Tower downtown and were what blew out windows in the office buildings.
Um, yeah. Thanks. Perhaps they were standing on top of Mt Yamnuska too. Normally planes don't land on top of the Calgary Tower or Mt Yamnuska. Here is the headline of the paper (National Post) I was questioning.
Lufthansa flight makes dramatic landing in 149km/h Calgary windstorm
Sorta implies at the airport dontchathink.
No need to get snarky, I asked a simple question as I had not seen the paper. Thanks for the clarification anyways.

As far as what is a normal x-wind technique for large aircraft, this video of B777 fight test landings is an oldie but goodie!
