I'm afraid to say this, and actually quite ashamed to, but we truly are (pilots) our own worst enemy!!!

the union and ALPA rep are just playing the game and say something because they can not stay silent. but how come those guys ignore the terms and conditions of a 5 years contract between TS and Canjet ? you can't revoke such a mutual agreement involving million$ in 1 week for just 17 pilots laid off.
relationship between union and management has always been a joke : you beat me, I bark; but in the backstage everybody agrees about what's gonna happen to who and when.
Laying off people will always be the preferred option before a complete company failure.
at least you have a better chance to be called in the future.

good luck to all TS pilots looking for a job.

Lets look at this from a different perspective. Yes it is terrible that the 17 AT pilots were laid off. With that said; how many of these pilots would actually seek out, apply and take jobs with Canjet or Sunwing or any other small 705 operation? Keep in mind that has been stated previously that they just recently left good jobs to go to AT. I would be surprised if any would go to Sunwing or Canjet or other small operator. If they did I am sure it would be well known it was with the intentions of gaining nothing more than a temporary pay check with some leaving while undergoing type training. (How long does it take to type train a pilot on a 737NG from scratch?)

I see alot of complaining by the union groups and their representatives; however they do not paint the full picture. I am sure Sunwing and Canjet would love to have the opportunity to hire and retain the experienced pilots that were laid off by AT. How many former Jetsgo, Zoom, Skyservice, etc... are working at Sunwing and Canjet? I am sure alot of other smaller 705 or 704 operators would love to hire their experience as well. Hiring does not happen overnight and on demand as soon as a layoff occurs. I am sure they would also be sceptical about how long they would stay if hired. They would be expected to jump at the first opportunity to AC, AT or WJ once again. Its a catch 22... Once you move up its hard to move back down.
Don't think you will see too many guys looking at going to Sunwing temporarily. Unless you got an extra $24,000 laying around....

Sunwing has a posting for pilots dated Nov 25th .... same week ALPA went to the media to shed light on their practice of hiring foreigners ! Wonder if it's a coincidence ...

Transat union president was talking to the senate last night, anxious to see what was said.

I found the clip that was recorded at the meeting with senate members ...
Very disappointing ... the foreign pilots issue was only briefly talked about.

The senate members seemed more interested in the low number of paved runways in Yukon than the issue at hand.

A swing and a miss...

Good news for pilot affected by layoff... AT are supposed to call back all pilot for may 1st 2012 (maximum).... and they are expected to hire few more pilots... (they are planning 10 new position for pilot)...
Just bad to be on layoff for this time of the year...

I hope it's going to happen 007. is this information coming from union ?
in the meantime they still have a loss of 12m$ and don't have this winter's performance yet.
they'll outsource wide-body aircraft to other companies as well as refurbish some A330.
as for already announcing 10 open pilot seats in 8 months from now, it seems a bit early.

Was it really required to lay off 15 pilots for 35 days for a large operation like Transat. Considering the laid off only got their PPC with no time, they probably will have to retrain for a few days. I wonder how much money the shareholders saved. That being said, still amazing news for our colleagues! Very happy, I even hear more hiring for the summer.

In my opinion, it's never worthwhile to layoff 17 pilots for such a short period. The money that may have been saved in salaries will be more than offset by the cost of pilots quitting and having to retrain new ones.

Good for them, and good for Transat, especially if they'll be back in hiring mode...

I've heard 16 openings.
Sim evals took place this week (feb 6-10).

I think those interviewed were told about the possibility of a layoff in the fall.
That's gotta suck :(

How many people does Transat typically interview to hire 16 people.

Knew a guy who interviewed there last year, he made it to the sim and thought he did well at it, but he didn't get the job. The guy told me that everybody seemed to pass the interview and make it to the sim, which would have made the odds longer.
