Looking for photo of Godfrey Webster Dean

Post by Billie T. »

Hello Everyone,

As part of my research on airplane crashes on Kagianagami Lake in northern Ontario, I cam across the fact that Godfrey Webster Dean was killed when the Junkers 33fi crashed on March 12, 1932 near the Hudson Bay Trading Post on the lake.

Dean was also the first pilot to fly a "loop to loop" or upside down. He did that at on Oct. 13, 1932 at Willow Grove in Pennsylvania, U.S.

I have been trying to find a head and shoulders photo of Dean, but I'm not having any luck. I did find a photo of Dean standing in front of a Pitcairn Autogiro. I've also found a number of newspaper articles on Dean, but none of them had photos.

And as expected, I've searched on the internet far and wide, but so far nothing.

I realize that there may be no photos of Dean, but I'm hoping that someone will read this post and point me in the right direction – if there is one.

Thank you in advance for all your help.

Bill Thompson

Hi, Godfrey was my great uncle and I have several photos of him. One of these came from his employment file which is held at the Provincial Archives, Manitoba. The file includes documents relating to the crash, correspondence with his mother in England after the crash and several photos of the crash site itself. I can sent you a copy of the photo but am not sure how to do this via this board. Kind regards, Hilary Soper.

Hello Hilary Soper,

To say that I was excited about reading your post would be an understatement.

Your great uncle was quite the pilot indeed and searching for any information – but especially photos – for him has been quite the challenge. I would like to communicate with you by email if that's OK.

I am just reading your post at 7:30 p.m. on Tues., May 7 and I see that you're offline.

My email address is outdoorswithbill@rogers.com

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sincerely,
Bill Thompson
