I hear you. Left seat on the old 73 got tired really fast. Hated hotel rooms. Semi retirement is best!

Free advice: Stand under the money tree.

Work your day job. Generate cash. Don't
buy toys on credit. Drive a used car that's
paid off. Get rid of debt. Accumulate cash.

Get your licences and ratings and hours
part-time in the evenings and weekends
as you can afford them.

I know people here think I'm pretty stupid
compared to them, but debt is like crack.
It might feel good at first, but long term,
it's a really bad idea.

Colonel, I already drive a Chevy Colorado Z71 without payments (bought new, but that was 8 years ago). I know it inside and out, costs are generally minimal to keep it rolling as I do a lot of the maintenance my self. It is fuel efficient enough for road trips and is tough enough for working outside of the city. So good vehicle without debt: Check. I live in a bachelor that a friend rents to me that is relatively cheap for Victoria. The only debt I have is a big credit card bill the got pretty racked up from my training in the US, which was supposed to be less than 6-8 weeks and ended up taking almost 12 to get me home. If there was a money tree I would be hugging it like a hippy protecting the spotted owl! I've eliminated as much overhead as I can. The only thing I pay too much for is my cell phone with my BC number which I have to keep for now. (PS: if your paying too much and don't care about the number just get one from Saskatchewan. The plans are up to $50 less than anywhere else! With unlimited Canadian calling the number wont matter!)

If I was to buy a plane in this concept it would be a $20-30k range 150/152 such as; http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopi ... =8&t=95344 or if I can make it happen and feel rich; http://www.avcanada.ca/forums2/viewtopi ... =8&t=96072. I wouldn't want to go into a partnership if there is a good chance I'd be moving around and renting is so bloody expensive even at block rates. Flying 4-5 hours a month at rental rates (a lot are 200+ an hour) could easily pay for a small loan for a beater Cessna/Piper while getting more hours. Especially since rental places will charge per day on longer trips for the time your not even flying. MIFR is cheaper but would take a while under the 3-4 hour/month concept, so its kind of the same thing financially.

If this all sounds misguided I am humble enough to realize that I am working semi-educated guesses and trying to make a reliable plan. This is all predicated on my finding more work of course, and work that pays more than pumping gas. So until that happens this all a thought exercise anyway. I have already had someone offer to help find work, and I am extremely grateful for that! If anyone else has a lead in the south western corner of our great country, shoot me a line! You'd be helping a frustrated wannabe pilot out!
