On another note (to take SOME heat off of the controllers), I recall a NOTAM this summer relating to YWG radar being down for some time and all aircraft to expect delays in sequencing etc.

In any other situation the solution is easy. ATIS:"Winnipeg terminal flow in effect, no VFR or training flights permitted, blah blah blah". 1-8???-wx brief:"good morning Winnipeg FIR", YOU:"Good morning, I'd like to file an IFR flight plan please"

It's been a daily feature in the summers as long as i've been flying in the area (2 years?). Especially as someone who instructs IFR, it sucks to receive a call from ACC and get my booking cancelled. Hurts the student, as well as the instructor.

Having said that, there are also times where controllers are really accomodating, especially one of them - (Chris? The guy with th aussie accent.).

Would I like to be able to fly within the TCA as much as I want without having to fax requests all the time? Yup.

It has nothing to do with the controllers working at the time. The call is made by the bitchy and entitled WG Terminal supervisors, who uniformly have a superiority complex that I couldn't begin to describe. That applies to many controllers in that speciality as well.

They bitch to the Shift Mgr, and the Shift Mgr implements the flow.

And they're never as busy as you'd think. The flow is uncalled for, and I don't know why they get away with it.

Beginning this summer, if this BS flow is again implemented by Terminal, I will begin naming the entire staff here, with personal contact info, so you may voice your complaints directly to them.

Friendly advice, don't post anyone's private info without their consent. For the record I do not work there.

I agree with Braun. Not only will you most likely get banned from here, there are real world repercussions that you would have to deal with for disclosing that information.

The flip side is there is all the overtime you want with the shortage. And if your not in YWG to make money then your a confussed individual. as for the guy with the "aussi" accent, I'm preety sure he'd kick your butt for making that comment. After all it's clearly a British accent :).

now I don't know Rog in YYZ but I would like to put chris and rog side by side in a busy terminal and watch them work, after years of listening to chris it suprises me that this is a tough area to control but I guess that just showes you how good a job he does.

I must admit that I'm a little bit mystified by how YWG could be a 'complex' terminal, and one that needs frequent flow in effect (if I go by what a few on here are saying, that is...). I admit I'm not familiar enough with the airspace layout and procedures to pass a valid comment. I am familiar, however, with their type(s) of traffic and the satellite airfields to not be considered clueless. What's their staffing level right now?...15 bodies for a requirement of 25....? Why all the guff?

On the flip side... it is kind of nice not having all these little VFR 152's all over making 45 second position reports to the terminal controller.... (Not knowing where they are).

Today was the first day I heard anything about flow in a few months. Suck it out people. It will happen from time to time.

The staff in YWG terminal do a great job. They are all friendly, knowledgeable, keep us flowing as quickly as possible, and try their best to accommodate every one of our little requests... Heck, they sometimes even let us land on 18 when 36 is active!

Oh. You must be referring to that YYZ departure controller who had the manners to call the Jazz pilot a cunt, bitch, etc with a stuck mic.

No. We for sure do. I just check the Tx light before dropping the F bomb.

Your the minority for sure. I've been working the job for just over 5 years now and I have heard profane language 7 or 8 times from pilots over the radio. And not once since I have started has anyone working at my station had a stuck mic and transimited profane language, or at least no one has reported it! There are times I look back and thank god I didn't have a stuck mic however!

hehe. We hate vectors off our track, and you guys hate stupid, non-compliant pilots.

I will honestly say. There is only one controller in my region that I feel the need to vent over. As soon as pilots realize he is the one on freg, the radio calls go from nice and relaxed conversations, to straight to the point and as fast as possible. The best overheard situation was him reaming out an aircraft for requesting a different FL for turbulence "you are really messing up my work, you know that" said the controller  . I don't request descent from him anymore. I just fly until he has reason to believe I should start down, and suggest it himself.

I do have reason to believe that a gremlin has breached NavCanada's security and is controlling aircraft in that sector.

You may (or not) be surprised to hear that there are a lot of knuckleheads who hold ATC licenses. And trust me, good controllers who work airspace adjacent to ones being worked by those dipshits don't enjoy it, either. I just expect that from a pilot's perspective, you can always tell pretty quickly who's competent vs who isn't.

Why can't we all just get along!!!! We need a monthly beer and wings night in every sector across the country.

I propose a Winnipeg FIR one in July at Tavern Downtown.

Ps. NavCan is paying. 8)

I was working next to said controller that very same night at exactly the time it happened..and some enlightened internet folk even thought it was me thanks to the wonders of liveatc.net. Oh the infamy that could have been!

The swiss cheese model that led up to that exact moment was impressive though....at least 5 holes of cheese before that statement occured (and it was actually stupid f****ing C***).
I am surprised it hasn't been featured yet on Mayday as there were many things that could have been learned from it afterwards. Especially on how to work the rest of a night shift killing yourself laughing between each transmission.
