Light sport Airplanes

Post by danishroy »

I am almost done my ppl. I would really like to own a experimental plane. I am looking at Sonex and the kithawks. Not the prettiest looking airplanes but they look really fun to fly and are not too expensive. Now my question is, it says those 2 airplanes are "light sport". Does Canada have a light sport category? Also will the hours I fly in those aircraft count towards my CPL. Anyone here own one of those or have owned one before?

No such thing as light sport in Canada. Your hours will certainly count towards the cpl ... if it is registered as an experimental airplane. If it is registered as an ultralight only a few hours will count.

Your first step if you want to own a homebuilt should be to join a local EAA or RAA chapter.

+1 on joining the local RAA chapter.

Zenair is another option. They are located in Midland, so parts are readily available. The CH 750 is a very fun airplane to fly as long as you are not in a hurry to get somewhere.

As the owner(and builder) of an amateur built, I can tell you that you must be very mechanically inclined and knowledgeable to stay on top of the maintenance. I am sure that this would be the case with almost every amateur built since no two are alike. Make sure you are prepared to learn everything about your plane and are capable of doing the maintenance/repairs or you will pay.

Ofcourse i am willing to learn and i am a 3rd year Heavy duty mechanic. So definitely have the skills to maintain equipment. I really want to build my own but I dont have a garage or any place to build. But i will check those places and talk to all the people i can.

If you have the skills but no space, find someone with a similar desire who has space but would benefit from skilled help.

I know of a diverse group who all started their own version of the same plans built aircraft at the same time. They were able to help each other in different ways. Several of them are flying already and others are getting close.
