Info on St Pierre and Miquelon

Post by PilotDAR »

I'm thinking of stopping at St Pierre and Miquelon during a planned trip to Newfoundland this summer. Does anyone have any advice on which Island (or both) to stop at? Is customs arriving there, or back in Newfoundland, a problem? Which is the nearest airport of entry in Newfoundland?

I'm also thinking to tour Newfoundland somewhat, perhaps up to Fogo Island. Any advice or suggestions?

I did some research on it in the summer. The COPA site has the number for the airport. It's also in the CFS. It's a French number (long distance), I'm sure you can ask them if they can arrange customs. I've also heard just asking Approach (same frequency as Tower) to have customs come meet you. I believe Winterland (CCC2) has customs (might be Canpass members only). If not, you could fly to St John's. I've heard Avgas is only sold in 55 gallon drums and it is very very pricey. They use the Euro there. Biggest issue for me was the flying club's insurance policy only covered "North America" and it was questionable whether they would cover the small french islands, as they are technically France.

Either way I would love to go some day and will once I purchase an aircraft.

This is the website of the St Pierre government airport authority. I used Google Translate to read it.

Pilotdar,
Are you on floats or wheels? There is a new COPA flight , Flight 195 at Exploits Valley Airport, CCP2, good Mogas available. Loaner vehicle and accommodations as well for visiting COPA members. With a bit of notice of requirements , we could probably help with Avgas. Fogo Island is a must....they will pick you up at airport and drive you to the New Hotel for an excellent affordable meal. PM me if I can be of any assistance.

One should read Bay Of Spirits by Farley Mowat, if one wants to have any more reasons to visit Newfoundland and the French Isles.
