Runway Status Lights in Canada

Post by Deadwood »

Does anyone know if any Canadian airports are considering or planning to get RWSL systems?

http://code7700.com/runway_status_lights.htm

The feedback I have heard from US Controllers is that the system is amazing, and really helps with controller workload. The FAA is rolling it out at most major US airports, so I was wondering if there had been any push to have the system deployed at some of the major fields up here?

Not that I know of. Canada is generally 10-15 years behind in any sort of technological advances taking place elsewhere in the rest of the developed world.

I believe at most US airports this is all paid for by the taxpayers. In Canada airports would have to up the AIF to pay for it.

Tell me about it. Frustrating to read about yet another runway incursion in YYZ, and knowing there is something that could be put in place to reduce the risk of occurrence.

Maybe new taxi instructions would help.

"Taxi VIA txwy A. Hold short RWY 33L VIA the txwy."

A device is yet to be invented that will measure my indifference to this remark.

I believe the new parallel runway (17-35?) in Calgary has the Runway Status Lights installed. Could someone in the know confirm?

Negative.. I would request some more lighting on the west side of the airfield before runway status lights.

fwiw, the system in the US is completely automated, running on radar data and computers, without ATC inputs. It is pretty slick.

FWIW all of the runway incursions on 06L/24R by aircraft that have landed on 06R/24L have involved the aircraft getting and reading back a "hold short" clearance and then crossing a stop bar lit at max brilliancy. There are already enhanced paint marking and more fancy lighting isn't likely to help much.

Cossack,
You obviously haven't seen the lights in use. There is absolutely NO doubt as to whether one is cleared onto or across said runway. The lights in YYZ are a far cry from what is now the gold standard.
Cheers.

Any pilots who taxi across the red stop lights that are already in place in YYZ are just not paying attention to what they are doing so I don't think having more lights to ignore is going to make a difference

I've seen them online and yes, there are more lights, but as av8ts says, it doesn't matter how many lights or how much paint you put down, an inattentive crew are still going to cross. Maybe we need crews to be more of a "gold standard" or resort to this:

or this?

Arresting equipment and materials, runway and approach lighting, ATC weather radar and flight and duty time regulations. All things Canada is terribly behind the times on.
