Has anyone tried flying there using a vfr or cvfr flight plan?
Looks like at least some people have done it: https://generalaviationnews.com/2017/06 ... s-to-cuba/
However I'm wondering this from a Canadian perspective (should be easier for us right?)
If someone did, or even a recreational IFR flight there.. what were the challenges? And fees?

I've been there once in a private plane. It was IFR. No issues. Things take a while. If you're in line for whatever service, and a military plane pops up, they'll have priority. For anything.
I don't recall the fees. We used a handler. Not sure if that was required. Friendly people. They might inspect your plane for contraband, and quite thoroughly as well. Try to organize transportation via the handler. Not every driver on the road there is as careful as you'd hope. You'll see multiple car accidents if you drive on busy roads. It's mayhem out there.
Smoking everywhere. Nobody gives a damn about pollution. You can really see the country is trying to modernize as well.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

There's a few companies in the US (including fltplan.com) who can arrange the permit. Alternatively, you can arrange the permit yourself. Don't forget to give an ETA update to Havana Center before entering their airspace as well as Miami on the way back (ADIZ stuff). I've only flown in on a 705 jet, but it's really no big deal.
