Nexus violation examples

Post by pelmet »

I like to keep up to date on what can get you into trouble. It might be minor stuff that you didn't think about. This article has a few items......

https://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/canada ... -1.6036484

I have been through US customs a lot. In one city, we used to arrive late at night and there was no food at the the hotel, not even a candy bar machine and nothing open nearby. And I don't like sleeping on an empty stomach. So I would make sure to save something of the catering to be eaten after landing. One did have to consider how quickly the caterers got to the aircraft and grabbed everything and put them in their special bags that are apparently burned to keep America safe. Only a bottle of water would be with me as I passed through customs.

Actually, as I liked to say......you can bring as many kinds of food as you want into the US, as long as you are carrying it in your stomach or somewhere further along.

You won't get into trouble for bringing any food, as long as you declare it. They might also confiscate some items, but no punishment if you declare it.

As an AvCanada discussion grows longer:
-the probability of 'entitlement' being mentioned, approaches 1
-one will be accused of using bad airmanship

Going on a three day pairing, I'd bring my 6 Pack Fitness Insulated meal bag packed with enough nutritious food for the whole pairing through customs. It wouldn't supplement meals at hotels but it allowed me to never touch the on-board meals or coffee. As long as you learn and follow their convoluted rules, bringing in fresh or cooked food into the USA or Canada isn't an issue. On that note, aside from citrus, Canada is more strict on cooked food from the USA. If I remember correctly, cooked chicken from California wasn't allowed but from Philadelphia was okay.

On the note of Nexus violations. I once forgot my Nexus pass at home going through US Customs at YYZ. Just by luck the guy asked me to see it that one day. He started giving me grief and threatened me with a fine or a violation. Once his Supervisor got involved, he backed down because the machines at the airport are Global Entry machines and not Nexus machines. To use the Nexus machines, you need your Nexus card and for Global Entry you only need your passport.

It is a complicated system but once you know the rules, it's pretty easy to plan ahead or take advantage of them.
