Who are the Most Overated Musicians?
Here's a few IMHO.
Paul Mccartney after the Beatles.
Peter Gabriel
Peter Frampton
The Rolling Stones should have retired 20 years ago.
Oasis
Jennifer Lopez(is she a musician?)
Bryan Adams
Rush(maybe they should have retired the same year as the Stones)
Can you think of any others?

Sorry Doc, but how many good songs did McCartney do after the beatles?
I can't think of that many.
Band on the run
live and let die
I'm sure there are more, but it seems his legend was built teaming up with lennon.
Maybe it's because if I compare in my head the % of great beatle songs to the % of great mccartney(and wings) songs, pauly's writing talents seem weak.
Don't get me wrong though. He was great in the beatles.
......but maybe just average without them.

Radiohead? Depends on which years I guess...monkeyspankmasterflex wrote:Coldplay

U2? Bite. your. tongue.
Over-rated musicians.....hmmm.
Oasis for sure.
Simple Plan
I'd have to agree with the rap comments... but only the hardcore, "gangsta" stuff... Old rap was and still holds up (well some of it)
50 Cent (mumble mumble window shopper)
Most pop acts (thank God bubble gum pop is dead!)
Celine definately (difference between great singer and artist)
Hell, the Pumpkins lead man Billy couldn't sing to save his life, but he was artistic for sure. It all really comes down to who you like and whether or not they're popular I guess.
Maybe a better question would be:
What musicians are UNDER-rated?
Money, wish I had it...

RUSH overated?!! aye carumba. as a jazz musician, i actually study this stuff at the university level. granted, it's not beethoven, but geddy and the boys write some pretty complicated stuff, both lyrically and harmonically/melodically.(as a full time musician/ piano tuner, i still make way more than i ever did flying)
Anything from 604 records... Nickleback sucks... greatly overplayed and chad kroeger himself is a self righteous dick. Made an absolute ass of himself to me and a good bud.
I stand by my nirvana statement.. sure he might have been half talented... but this was about who was OVER RATED! I'll also say overplayed, over analyzed... the guys been dead for 10 years and the local radio stations play something by nirvana as every 2nd song almost.

I wouldn't say that he was average without Lennon. It's more as he once said that he needed someone like Lennon with the guts to say, "that sucks fix this and it'll be good." Post Beatles he was surrounded by gutless psyncophants who wouldn't tell him shit if he was standing in it. By the same token, I think Lennon needed McCartney just as badly; that last album of his was horrible.Special K wrote:Sorry Doc, but how many good songs did McCartney do after the beatles?

Yeah, the Beatles before Paul McCartney. If I hear one more track off of Abbey Road it will be one too many. They sure played a major part getting the haluconogenic era of the 60's rollin with their white album, etc. It seems to me that their sole purpose was getting MJ and every other hallucinogen know to man popularized, for what ever reason..Special K wrote:Here's a few IMHO.

Birddog:
Although I have responded to this, it really seems like a pointless thread - music is totally subjective, and so very rarely will we come to a consensus as to what is good or bad.
Agreed on Celine, but you're writing off a fine artist in Johnny Cash with that blanket statement. I always liked "The Gambler", by kenny Rogers, too..Anyone.....ANYONE & EVERYONE in country music.
When I hear country...I wanna chew my ears off if I could.
Oh and Celine Dion!

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Nirvana - To quote a musician "Kurt Cobain realized he was a loser and stuck a shotgun in his mouth"
Coldplay - The best thing Gwenyth "Skeletor" Paltrow has ever done is (rumoured to be) breaking up this band that was famous before they ever performed for anyone (I don't know about elsewhere, but here, they seemed to be annointed, kinda the same way Colin Farrel was annointed to being a top actor)
The Doors - Sure, Morrison was a poet, but he was also a drunk... that being said, the actual band was one of the best improvisational bands ever. They had no idea when Jim might just pass out and leave them in need of a fifteen minute organ/piano/bass solo.
Mariah Carey - Giving this woman's dog whistle voice any credit for music just seems wrong. I cannot for the life of me understand why anyone let her ressurect her career after Glitter, she was down, and we should have left her there.
That is all,
back to class I go
