From TSB....

C-FKOE, a privately-registered Cessna A185F aircraft, was conducting a VFR flight from Nanaimo
(CYCD), BC to a private airstrip in Surrey, BC with only the pilot on board. While descending for
landing, a catastrophic, uncontained engine failure (Teledyne Continental IO-550-D) occurred. The
pilot conducted an emergency landing in a vacant bog area of a park. The aircraft contacted trees
and impacted the terrain in a nose-down attitude; a post-impact fire began on impact. The pilot
egressed out the front right door. The pilot received serious injuries. The aircraft was destroyed.
The emergency locator transmitter did not activate.

Sounded like an air pump in the video. Anything more specific on the nature of the engine failure? Good thing it made it to dry land.

"The emergency locator transmitter did not activate." Yet we keep on religiously filing flight plans and spending hundreds annually on ELT batteries and tests. Or, at a fraction of the cost we could have automatic 2 min satellite flight following and flight note. You do you.

Why? Otherwise it wouldn't have been destroyed by fire?

Good judgment comes from experience. Experience often comes from bad judgment.
