Now, someone correct me if I'm wrong but, if you watch closely during the slow-mo it looks like the tail rotor stops (on the second hit, just after it starts to yaw). Isn't the tail rotor mechanically connected to the main rotor (just geared down)? I didn't think that was possible (without breaking teeth off of gears or shearing drive shafts I guess).

You gotter Tui, I'd say the driveshaft sheared when the tailrotor contacted the deck. If you saw the driveshaft on a light piston like that, you'd understand.

I wouldn't doubt that some damage was done to the gearboxes as well, but not to worry, the entire drivetrain has to be yanked after a strike like that.

Did the pilot take off or did the helicopter get thrown off? Looks to me like it came off the deck when the boat went down after the swell had passed.

Care to post a little more about the nets? Is it just that helipads are designed slippery by mistake and a net fixes that or what?

Steel Helipad + Skid Helicopter = Low Coeficient of Friction

The nets increase the friction preventing sliding in rough conditions or rotating during Nr increase or decrease. I have seen a jetranger spin 90 degrees while spooling up (a bit to quickly).

I am convinced that if the net seen in the video was not there we would be watching a helicopter swimming video.
