Cleaning the floats

Post by Gurundu the Rat »

Well I finally got the floats installed in August and the ole C-170 performs just fine dispite everyone saying it won't get off the water with my cruise prop. Ok so it's a bit underpowered but it's still a blast. I took it out of the water for winter storage and already after two months its got a layer of brown crud under the water line. What do you guys use to clean your floats? Thanks.

Why not, next time it is out of the water, paint the underside of the floats brown ... problem solved.

Use it more - the creatures can't cling if you're not sitting still!

Spray Nine is the ultimate. Canadian tire sells it. :D Dont forget the scrub brush for between the rivets and a nice freshwater rinse job afterwards...

I used to fly floats off the Red River in Manitoba, anybody who leaves their plane in for more than a day will know of the brown scum that sticks to the floats, we used curling broom (brush) and scrubbed the floats daily. If you do this you have much work to do when you pull the plane out at the end of the season. If your plane is at the cabin and you're not there daily then maybe the neighbours kid can help you out.

I actually considered a pressure washer but I don't want to strip the paint either.

Just take off like this guy.

There should be enough scraping action to get just about anything off the floats.
