I've always been highly impressed with the level of support the Israeli Armed Forces receives from its government and the high degree of professionalism present that I have seen with the Israeli military. It is one of their most enduring traits.

I wonder how "neat" the people who are bombed by the IAF virtually everyday of there lives think that video would be.

I am neither jewish nor arab. As a disinterested observer I will however give some free advice to (you) arabs, whom I understand don't exactly try to keep it a secret that they wish to kill all the Jews:

Don't start something you can't finish.

Here in North America, it is a valuable lesson that we endeavour to teach our children, and is worth remembering even as you get older.

Understand that when see video's glorifying the Isreal military it offends. As a 3rd party observer I see the systematic genoside of the palistians as a sad, sad thing. I see Isreal disregard for the UN/international law as shameful.

If everyone is made to be afraid of critising Isreal because they will be labled a racist anti semite, than Isreal will have a free ride and never be held accountable and never make the changes it so despriatly needs.

So in reality I am trying to help Isreal by opening discussion (bearing your's and others slings and arrows in the process) Don't worry for Paradise, I have broad shoulders.

The begining of that video with the history and graphics comes straight from the intro of Jane's IAF combat simulator. Was a really good game for back in the day.

Before anyone calls it propaganda, remember, when everyone hates you and the american religious right believes if it does not exist then the world will come to an end. Then basically you have to have the best military in the entire world.

You know, when I saw 20 replies to this post overnight, I thought it mus really be a kick-@ss video. But then I started reading. I have the following comments.

#1. This is an aviation board. Niss posted a video about an air force. The problem lies where with that?

#2. The foreskin joke made coke come out of my nose. I'll get you one of these days, Niss.

#3. BMC has a point well taken about Izzy Asper and biased journalism.

#4. "Systematic genocide" is a gross exaggeration of what's happening between the Mediterranean and the river Jordan. If that were truly the goal, there would be far more bloodshed. Take a look at Rwanda, Kosovo, the former Yugoslavia, Darfour, Cambodia...don't insult my intelligence.

#5. Niss, you failed us. You forgot to mention the combination of lox, bagels, cream cheese, and capers. And blood oranges. And Hebrew steak houses. Of course, cuisine looms large in my estimation of Jewish contributions to modern North America because I'm originally from Montreal. Oversimplifying this by calling it all "cooking" is a crime.

It may be before your time, but IIRC there were many famous quotes by excitable Arabs (usually before lopsided (on their side) wars, which they seemed to always badly lose, for some reason) about "driving the jews into the sea".

Try a search engine if you're interested. I'm not, really.

Hedley, Thanks for your thoughtfull input, but the last ones that said "Drive the jews into the sea", were not arabs. If you cannot make the difference between races, then be careful. Arab is not equal to muslim.

It was a little bit before my time, being born just after the Yom Kippur war...but I'm also a student of military history, so I'm quite familiar with the wars that happened between 1948 and the Lebanese civil war, even though I don't have any memory of them being covered in prime time.

As to why the seemed to lose? I'd say there are a few reasons.

#1. Soviet equipment and inflexible soviet tactics used against a flexible, cohesive, imaginative opponent.

#2. A deep-seated cultural decision amongst the Israelis that after WWII, the "Diaspora" aproach to cultural survival is flawed. Translates into "Defeat is not an option".

#3. A relatively small country beset on all sides by numerically superior opponents tends to gather a fair amount of sympathy from the international community, and when combined with the economic success of the Jewish diaspora, the sanctions that are often applied to a modern nation involved in a conflict weren't always a factor with respect to Israel.

#4. In 1948, officers and men who had served in the armies of most of the Allies in WWII brought the combination of a fanatical will to win and first-rate professional soldiering skills to the Israeli side. An example is "Baseplate" Benny Dunkleman. He had been a Major in the QOR during WWII, but became a Major-General in the Israeli army by the end of the war.

#5. Cultural and political realities of the region at the time meant that even though all states had conscription, the effect was one of a first-rate professional army backed up by a motivated and well trained reserve force clashing with forces made up of conscripts serving three year terms. In 1973, the Israeli colonels and sergeants leading the soldiers had been lieutenants, captains, and corporals in 1967. This sort of all-encompassing corporate experience in the real business of war is of immense value.

And don't worry, Hedley. When I dig a hole and stand in front of it, I don't get all that upset when someone pushes me in.
