Tuition Audit

Post by niwre »

Its not a big deal but it seems that some people become "targets". They claim that it is random but this is the second time I am being audited in the last three years. I am just wondering who else is putting up with this.

its common, I had it happen to me both years I was in school. I guess $60 in tuition in 2 years sets off the buzzers...

Randomly selected all three years! I believe theres a dollar figure at which they just tag everyone!

Don't be fooled.. the government doesn't like not being able to take their money from you

Be interesting to see a poll on this. I also got "randomly chosen" all of the years I've submitted flight training.

Unless they send you a registered letter don't worry about it.

They sent me a letter last year, and I was to call them about it so we could get things going. However I never received it as it wasn't registered (wink, wink) and I haven't heard a thing since.

My wife has been audited three years in a row, each time for her moving expenses. I highly doubt there's anything random about that. In the explanation letter that they require I was tempted to tell them nicely to screw off. I mean, I know they just want their fair share of her massive income of ~$10,000 (university student for 5 years and counting). Stupid tax tards.

End rant.

I'm 5 for 5 since I started my career in aviation. I guess something about moving and expenses and tutition year after year set off some buzzers.

Here's my question, all they want to see is the T11b, why not just ask for it when you submit the F-ing thing as opposed to me sending in my package then 6 months down the road you sending me a letter saying I was "randomly selected"?

Chop&Drop why would the Canadian gov't do anything rational like that? perish the thought! I never got "randomly selected" the first year. Oh well traditions have to start somewhere....happy anniversary to all those on their 3rd or 4th (and so on) letter!!!!

I have been audited for the last four years, but always after they processed the tax return. This year however, I got audited before they would process anything....and it took 3 months and many phone calls before they would accept it this year..

good so im not alone

its just bugs me that 7+months after I file my return they decide to audit

I know its just a simple find the document and fax but I know many students who have never had an audit and in the aviation sector it seems some people get audited through the yang.

I used to get audited regularly and now I use an accountant and they deal with it. Worth every penny of the $200 I spend.

The other thing is to just send everything in when you file - keep copies - then they don't need to ask. They also hate that, BTW.

I moved to Newfoundland 6 years ago and learned I couldnt claim my education amounts because they were set in BC. But BC recently phoned me saying I owed money for an overdue MSP, and were going to garnishee my wage if not payed....

The part that pisses me off is I went into our local tax office and the person trying to serve me could barely speak the language! How the @#$! do these people get decent jobs like that while we get the shit?
