Any pilot supply store.

Calgary Pilot Supply and VIP Pilot come to mind as far as online stores. There is also Aviation world.

Yea, wearing epaullettes as a student pilot looks foolish.

At least buy yourself a G-suit first.

Try a surplus store, you can get the nice navy sweaters for way cheaper and they are real wool and quite good :D

I agree a surplus store can get you a good deal. Other than that try some of the pilot stores. A good sweater would be good to have and you could possibly use it once you get a job. Just please don't wear epaullettes on them while in flight school.

If you really want to look professional you could get a flight suit. Maybe cover it with patches....no...wait....put velcro on it so you can move your patches around and change up your "flair" every day. Then, wear a gay-ass bomber jacket over it....

You guys sure know how make a person who's just getting into aviation feel good about him/herself.

Feenix if you still feel like you want to look for those sweaters after all of that, a few good places to start would be where HuD 91gt suggested.

Better to learn about it on a faceless forum then be ridiculed at the airport pub.

I agree that wearing the bars as a student is ridiculous. However, don't knock the student if it's required dress code by the school. What is he supposed to do???? You should be asking the head of the program if HE has any idea how silly he's making his students look. Having gone through the "forced" dress code thing, I know how frustrating it is to have people constantly pass judgment on you, without ever meeting you, simply because you wear a shirt and tie to school.

Screw the epaulettes.

If your looking for professionalism, spend your money on sorels and the biggest baddest parka around. Stuff the pockets with matches and an axe. Get one with big pockets for all the money your going to make.

The problem is those types of schools generally tend to charge 10-20% more than other smaller flight schools. People choose to go there because those schools generally have better marketing because they can afford it. While the training is most often quite good, IMO it doesn't compare to the small flight schools and the experience you get there.

the training will be just as good (probably better due to more 1-1 instruction) at the smaller schools you'll pay less for the exact same thing, your license.

I've yet to see WestJet/Air Canada hell even any of the small prop jobs require an aviation diploma.

It's who you know, and when you know them, and the hours in your logbook. No-ones going to give a crap if you had groundschool on $10,000 projectors, or your instructor drew you diagrams on the whiteboard, as long as you know the material you'll get your ticket.

A ticket is a ticket, I've found most of the guys coming out of small schools generally have far better knowledge of aviation than the bigger ones, and on top of that leave with a better attitude.

Sure it may help in some areas to have that "aviation diploma" but it comes down to experience in this industry, and that's it.

The flight school I went to gave me a key to the office when I was timebuilding, the fuel key, and the plane was mine anytime it wasn't booked.

I mean sure it was covered in paint chips, and it had to be primed 9 or 15 times in the middle of the summer, and it just couldn't fly level without a fight, but she was a beaut to me! :D
