speeding> do you?

Post by oldncold »

a just released transport canada study says 85 per cent of cdn's speed at
times and most canadians underestimate how much.

The ?? is do you as a pilot with your perceived enhanced ability to judge speed /time/ distance relationships speed on a regular basis.

just the facts man just the facts! 8)

It is statistically safer to speed a little so it only makes sense...

It takes a bit of common sense to be safe. If the road is bare and dry ad traffic is moving steady @ 15 km over on a divided highway, that is what I drive. If the road is in bad shape, I drive with the major flow. In town, I drive at 10 over in dry conditions if that is what the traffic is flowing at. Do I speed? On a regular basis and I have had one speeding ticket and no accidents since 1960.

The average pilot, despite the somewhat swaggering exterior, is very much capable of such feelings as love, affection, intimacy and caring.
These feelings just don't involve anyone else.

Yes, I speed. But by less than the average. On a typical busy urban thoroughfare (limit 50km/h), the average speed will probably be ~80km/h, I'll be doing 70km/h.

But I ALWAYS make sure I'm doing LESS THAN the posted 30km/h in a school zone within the signed hours.

I'm also very cautious by reducing risk in other areas. For example, never changing lanes on an intersection and being extra careful at pedestrian crosswalks - these are where I see by far the most near-misses on a regular basis. Most drivers don't seem to even notice that they're driving over a crosswalk. I guess it's habit when 80% of the time there isn't anyone there anyway.

14 years of driving. Only 1 ticket and that was in New Zealand, I was driving way too fast and deserved it (and would never have believed a Ford KA could go that fast anyway).

In Quebec we speed pretty much all the time. There are two reasons:

1) Speeding and driving like cracked out taxi drivers on their 9th cup of coffee of the day is pretty much standard for everyone around here, and

2) Most of the speed limits are set so insanely low that a kid on a bucycle is likely to get a ticket.

Montreal's Decarie Expressway, Metropolitain, and Cote De Liesse to the airport are all (ready?) 70KPH. You wonder why we speed? If we did 70 on those roads, we would get run over by a Greyhound bus.

Try living in most of Europe.

I don't see very many accidents there and they sure as hell drive a lot faster than Canadians.

Yes yes yes...esti de tabarnac! The freakin 40 is only 70 Km/h & it pisses me off!
L'idiot qui a decide d'elever le 40 est vrait nule!

Look, I usually drive a bit faster because I know how to drive! I am young & my reaction time is good...
I know how to drive.

Those kid idots who keep driving super fast are the problem. They are the stats!
One kid here in Mtl took a car out, started driving super fats (he only had a learners permit) & killed a 3 year old girl!

I don't think it's safer to speed.

just that the ones that do drive +15/20 over are generally younger more alert drivers.

I've lived in Germany for several years, and yes there are accidents there. Not only that, because the speeds are so high when they pile up on the autoban dozens and dozens of cars are usually involved and many people are killed. It is a bald faced myth that they are better drivers, they are just a little more disciplined in keeping to the fast lane. But they are also hyper aggressive...correction, they are complete assholes, so no they aren't safer.

I personally like driving the speed limit. It makes for a nice relaxing drive except when the speed demons use all the lanes for their own personal race track.

Cat, Europeans have accidents all the time like we do. When I drove on the Autobahn, I saw flipped & smashed B.M.Ws When they have accidents, they are huge!
Most Europeans drive fast & that's just their way.

But, they have less drunk driving related accidents, because they are smart!
Drinking level should be at 16 (wine & beer) & drivers permits should only be issued when your 18.

Notice how there are more drunk driving related accidents in the U.S!
I'm not sure if this is still true, but you can fly a fighter jet in the navy when your 20 but can't drink????

You could argue both sides for speeds overseas, in many parts of Asia, the speed limits are insanely low. And they are obeyed.

Mind you, when your towns are built extremely dense and suburban sprawl is minimized, coupled with the massive cost of owning/operating a car, you tend to alter your lifestyle so that short trips are the norm, and obeying a 30KPH limit, only means the drive takes three minutes instead of two.... Hard to put this into realistic practice here when our cities are designed around the car instead of foot/bicycle.

I used to think very poorly of asian drivers, till I saw what they grew up on. 60 KPH on the HIGHWAY ( I shit you not ), 30 KPH in town, tiny roads, tiny cars, wrong side of the road. Makes our road system look like anarchic chaos with blood thirsty road ragers just waiting to take you out.

Imagine moving overseas and the speed limit is now 150 in town, 350 on the highway, everyone drives jacked up hummers with bush bars and theyre all honking at you in your 1973 civic to get the $^^&#$ out of the way. No wonder theyre a little timid.

I try to drive faster than the slowest, slower than the fastest in the traffic around me. I dont always succeed and actually got a ticket this morning. Second one this year, thats two in five years...

The trick is....you have to learn how to speed properly!

My #1rule is:

If your gonna speed, wait for two speedier cars on the left lane to pass you, then follow them. So chances are, they will get the ticket & you will have some kind of warning ahead of you

Speed limits in Canada are in fact set "too low" especially when applied to dry summer conditions and when one considers the huge size of the lanes that we have. The reason for this is that the limits are a an all encompassing speed claculated to be a good average for all possible weather conditions and the deplorable level of driver skill in our country. It is very easy to get your licence in Canada and this is verly clearly demonstarted by the television program "Canada's worst drivers".

In European countries I have visited, getting ones licence to drive a car is a much more involved process and requires what seems to be much more driver skill and situational awareness than what is demonstarted on our roadways.

I have much respect for those that drive within their limits and never speed but my one pet peeve is people blocking the left lane. Although it's not a written rule for the most part, a coutreous slower driver will keep the left lane clear to allow those travelling faster then them safe passage.

Quebec announced today that they are moving from a 0.08 to a 0.05 to be considered a drunk driver, with automatic suspensions. They are also doubling the demerit points and fines for people speed more than 40kms over the limit. Celll phones will be banned without a hands free.

It is a "project loi", so it isn't law yet. But it is very likely to come into the game soon enough.

Good, way to catch up to the majority of the country, where I live it is .004. I speed regularly, but don't wish to do it amongst folks with impaired judgement, the freeway here looks like bumper cars for bar stars after midnight on the weekend, not a good time to be behind the wheel.

Just over the speed limit, enough to make people angry for going faster but not quite fast enough!

While we're on the subject of driving cars... what about distance behind the car you're following? 0.08 seconds still the rule???

And Cat... it depends on where in Europe you go. The further north the more cultivated people get, in a good way that is, mainly because of harder legislation against rule breakers. Just imagine going to jail for 25 km/h over...

I know an older guy, he loves to ride his Harley. Like
most Harley riders, he doesn't ride very fast - in fact,
on divided highways, he's always in the right lane,
always under the speed limit.

Should be safe, right? Wrong answer. Riding slower
than the traffic in the right lane forces every vehicle
on the road to recognize you and go around you.

A couple years ago, one didn't, he got hit from behind,
and he was in the hospital for many months. He's
still screwed up.

Now, you sanctimonious speed-limit obeyers may
think he did the right thing, by never exceeding the
speed limit. I dunno.

Would you rather have a speeding ticket or a hospital
room?

I set my cruise control for ten over....always. I still get morons riding my bumper. Never could figure that one out. They don't pass. They just sit there?
Red line is not a limitation. It's a goal!

Pilots drive different from normal folk. If you have another pilot beside you, thy always call "clear right" at intersections. Always. Ever see a group of pilots cross a street? They really do this. One checks for traffic, and the rest just formate on him, and blindly follow him across. They really do this!

morons riding my bumper
they're looking for a leader to follow. You do get good gas mileage that way, but I would recommend that you only do it with people you know really well.

I thought I was the only person who did that

Difference between driving here (North America) than in Europe is that in Europe, drivers DO move over to the right once they've finished overtaking. Also, it's illegal to be undertaking over there. I think having cars passing you at high speed on the inside lane is dangerous.
