Jazz wrapping up groundschools
I've heard a rumor that Jazz has done did reached critical mass with its pilots pool and will soon be wrapping up the groundschools. I don't know if that is a crock of bull or not? Anyone else heard anything about that?
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
DFO told me they are planning to hire 20/mo until the end of the year. We still have lots of guys quitting.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
I was told they're hiring 16-20 per month for the "foreseeable future". It's come down quite a bit compared to late 2007 numbers though.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Yep, still lots of guys leaving, can't see how they could stop hiring anytime soon.

Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
... only if they want to close their doors, due to not enough pilots!

Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Heard recently that they cancelled the June 9th Ground school due to reduction in flying.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Well with the removal of life vests to SAVE MONEY on fuel burns, and the candy service that they ripped off from Boston pizza that thank god is no more. One would wonder if they were to close doors.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
20/month for the next year from a very reliable source.

Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Considering the cost of maintaining and the weight of the life vests, why would you carry them if you only have one or 2 flights that may need them on the CRJ (the fuel pig)?? (Even those don't require them if you flight plan properly as they have done)

Maybe you should offer to donate your wages to make up the difference instead

No, but I wear underwear, just in case when I gamble on a fart!
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
no sim evals will be taking place in June.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
It is usual for them to reduce training over the summer though. They do that every year.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Jazz is a revolving door. Unless they're severely scaling back their fleet, or just shutting down, they won't be scaling their training back.

Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Air Canada is scaling back our flying, the hiring is done at Jazz and AC for now. Just look what's going on south of the border with the Airline bankruptcies.

Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Jazz will hire at the rate of pilot attrition less any reduced flying requirements. Same for AC.

Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
If Jazz is slowing down why do they have another job posting on workopolis??
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
I don't think the music is stopping just yet, there is still a steady stream of pilots from jazz going to WJ and others. Sunwing and Flair still looking for crews, among other 705 operators. From what I understand a slow down in the summer is not uncommon, being at jazz for just a few months I could be wrong but I believe this is how things go here. Anyway I guess only time will tell, goodluck to everyone
following our will and wind we may just go where no one's been.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Well in addition to a few factors listed above, the training slows if not ceases during the summer months because most trainers take vacation and obviously are unable to train. There has been a shortage of trainers at Jazz and summer time is off time. I've been here over a year and last summer there were none for 2 months. Hope this quells concerns.

Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Just look at the seniority list. You will notice that there were no classes during the summer months since they started hiring back in 05. Like mentioned above, the instructors take vacation and are on the line to cover for extra flying in the summer. As fo the hiring slowing down.......well, the classes themselves have gotten smaller (8-10 pilots as opposed to 15-20 in the past).
As far as reduction in flying. We are blocked for 82.5 hours in the May bid package, considering 75 is the minimum, I 'd say there is still enough flying out there.
Eventually the music will stop, but I don't think it will be this summer IMHO.
P.S. I remenber 2 years ago, (2006) people were saying that Jazz overhired and would be laying off that summer......never happened.

Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
The information came from the DFO last week. June 9th GS is cancelled, no more GS this year. Yes we are blocking high hours but the credits in the pairings went to crap and there is still lots of reserve. Talked to an AC pilot today, talk is that this summer there will be a down bid. Mainline is parking 4 767's this summer as well as sum A319s.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
Have you guys read the memo from ALPA about LOU 43? I think they'll need pilots if that goes through.
Re: Jazz wrapping up groundschools
AC isn't "parking 4 767's" due to loss of business...it's been planned (and crewed accordingly) for a loooong time.
