Word is, the USMC pilot ejected 2 miles from Mirimar.

No word on casualties on the ground.

I feel bad for the poor sods on the ground that got an F-18 in the face, but I actually feel worse for the pilot. I can't imagine what he must feel like knowing the aircraft he bailed out of killed two people. Guess the Captain doesn't go down with the ship anymore.

It must have been pretty bad if he couldn't aim it away from the homes before bailing out.
I guess if you can't control where it goes the best you can do is get out and hope and pray that it doesn't hurt anyone.

looks like mostly houses from the coast to the crash site, he may not have had a lot of choices if he'd previously decided to try to make it to the airbase.

SD is quite crowded with houses... So I don't believe he had much of a choice either...

Brings up the old problem: Why would you build or buy a home off the end of an airport runway? Location, Location, Location???????Mirimar has been the for eons.I feel sorry for the pilot as he was just following SOPs; somtimes there is little choice.

Aiming a jet in a particular direction is a great idea in theory however the force of the ejection, the change in aerodynamics with the canopy gone as well as the inherent instability of fighter jets usually causes it to chose a path of it's own once the occupants get out.

Was told a story once from a Canadian pilot who ejected many years ago after pointing the plane at fields...the thing ended up chosing a path that crashed it into a school! Thankfully it was Sunday and nobody was in the building.

I cannot comment on the crash for obvious reason's, however I have extensive knowledge of Miramar and it's airspace. And will offer this:

The active runway is usually 24R. The break is over the end of the runway with a left turn to stay north of highway 52 (google map). At no time does the aircraft fly over the houses.

I have no doubt that some on here will be able to piece together what happened with the information that's out there.

San Diego is beautiful place to live. To blame encroachment and the developers in this area is naive.

Nark, for some emergencies, you may not want to come back for an overhead break. Where does the straight in takes you?

SAN DIEGO, California (CNN) -- A Korean immigrant who lost his wife, two children and mother-in-law when a Marine Corps jet slammed into the family's house said Tuesday he did not blame the pilot, who ejected and survived.

Dong Yun Yoon addresses reporters Tuesday, a day after a jet crashed into his home and killed four of his relatives.

1 of 3 more photos » "Please pray for him not to suffer from this accident," a distraught Dong Yun Yoon told reporters gathered near the site of Monday's crash of an F/A-18D jet in San Diego's University City community.

"He is one of our treasures for the country," Yoon said in accented English punctuated by long pauses while he tried to maintain his composure.

"I don't blame him. I don't have any hard feelings. I know he did everything he could," said Yoon, flanked by members of San Diego's Korean community, relatives and members from the family's church.

...

The Union-Tribune spoke with Steve Diamond, a retired naval aviator who said he found the pilot in a tree behind a house. He told the paper he helped the man, who Diamond said was a lieutenant in his 20s, down from the tree. See satellite photo showing crash site, airfield »

The pilot told him that after he lost power in one engine, it was decided he would try to get the jet to Miramar on the single working engine, Diamond told the paper.

The pilot was in communication with military air traffic controllers before the jet crashed about two miles from the airfield, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the pilot ejected moments before the crash and landed in a tree. Jason Widmer said he talked to the pilot, who said he had tried to steer the jet from the homes and into a brushy canyon.

"He was pretty shook up and pretty concerned if he had killed anyone," Widmer told San Diego 6. "He had seen his bird go into a house."
I'd hate to be in either of their shoes right now. :(

I would. Like Nark said, standard procedure kept most aircraft away from the homes, but you'd likely still get a good show once in a while (and that isn't meant as any sort of sick joke). Now if they built and then complained about Miramar being there, that's a different story.

17.8 million awarded to the family of those killed on the ground. (from the government, not the pilot)
