Provincial Airways
I was told recently that the Provincial Airways Crews based at Montreal are being organized by the Teamsters Union, has anybody else heard this rumour. Appearantly there is a meeting planned by Management for employees based in St. John's for Sunday Night, 2/20/11.
Anybody else with information on this care to share it with the forum?
Merci

Re: Provincial Airways
A word of advice to the pilots at Provincial considering courting Teamster's - DON'T. By all means organize yourselves but the Teamsters are not the way to go. They might be good for the trucking industry but have not done well by representing the airline industry.

Re: Provincial Airways
To avoid confusion, remember the regional airline based out of St. John's is called Provincial AIRLINES, not Provincial Airways.
Splitting hairs maybe, but I think there is a Provincial Airways out west, so it can be confusing for some.

Re: Provincial Airways
That would be very interesting if they were to get a union setup there, when I was there the word was if a union started they would chain up the front doors and shut down the airline.....Also if anyone was ever caught speaking about it you would be conveinantly laid off.....Is that even possible?

Re: Provincial Airways
^Fear-mongering by management, IMHO. I can't see anyone shutting down a successful/profitable business out of spite just because the employees organised.
Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Northshore.... It happens. http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/ar ... Apr13.html
How can you tell which one is the pilot when you walk into a bar?....Don't worry he will come up and tell you.

Unions cost companies allot of money in the long run and make for lazy employee's IMHO.
You can deny it all you want but it's true

Re: Provincial Airways
PAL desperately needs a union in my opinion...not necessarily to improve wages, but to protect employees from unscrupulous managers. MANY pilots have been punished for reporting incidents under the SMS system. As of 1 year ago, there was a definite culture of being afraid to report anything for fear of being fired/black-balled/etc (and there are many good examples of this)...
The most important part of strong union in my opinion is to provide checks and balance in the safety department of an airline.

Re: Provincial Airways
Apparently nothing was brought up at the meeting regarding a union.
Re: Provincial Airways
Union in Montreal? First I've heard of it, and as for the Pilot meetings it wasn't mentioned.
Re: Provincial Airways
The meeting was all about increasing On Time Performance, and apoligizing for alot of schedule changes..... a new dash8-300 coming on-line......yadda yadda yadda.

Re: Provincial Airways
It's a good company with wonderful people, I hope they can avoid the ugliness that seems to go along with a union drive. But here's the thing, if you treat your people decently there's not much chance of a union coming on the property...
I’m still waiting for my white male privilege membership card. Must have gotten lost in the mail.

Re: Provincial Airways
Does anyone know if Provincial Airways is hiring any Captains/Fos on the Dash 8 based in St.Johns? Are they expecting any movement with anyone leaving? I haven't heard of any hiring there in awhile. Do they have anyone internally upgradeable?
Re: Provincial Airways
There is always movement there, they upgrade from within. Usually they hire the F/O's from either there SOCC center or on the ramp. Lots of young kids there now waiting, now thats not to say they won't hire someone with a good bit of time. I'd highly doubt they would do Direct entry Captain though.

Re: Provincial Airways
I know at least one Dispatcher is waiting for a Dash F/O position right now.
Haven't seen any openings yet though internally or externally posted recently.

Re: Provincial Airways
You saying they put 200 hr guys on the right seat of a dash-8 to fly on the east coast? That's awesomeall_ramped_up wrote:I know at least one Dispatcher is waiting for a Dash F/O position right now.

Re: Provincial Airways
Well it doesn't happen all the time but yeah it happens.....most time its into a twin otter in Goose Bay, or an F/O on a Metro.
But to be real, its easier to fly a dash then it is a metro with no autopilot around here. They haven't had many issues with who they put on there machines.

OceansEdge, I didn't think that you worked at Provincial Airlines anymore.

Re: Provincial Airways
I don't. I left a year ago. However, I saw George at the Operations Christmas Luncheon a few months prior to that. He and his family were presented with a commenerative painting in appreciation of his years of service.Max_Power wrote: OceansEdge, I didn't think that you worked at Provincial Airlines anymore.
