The road trip and the wait.....
Hey folks!
I will be leaving on a road trip looking for my first job (265 hours,CPL,MIFR,IATRA) very soon. I really want to work for Perimeter ,or if not possible, one of the operators in Thompson... Would moving to Thompson and waiting there while working any other job (assuming I don't find anything right away) be a good idea ??
I will be leaving from Hamilton and I am on a budget (a couple of grands), so driving across the whole country and spending money on gas, meals, lodging is not possible at the moment.... I figured maybe if I can move to a busy place that has good and reputable operators (I don't care where it is, if there is a job I will be there) where I can at least work and wait on a spot to open up, would give me a better chance....
I am open to suggestions to places where a newbie can move to and look for work..
Also if anyone can PM me any tips on how I can get started at Perimeter it would be great (I have already applied online)..
Thanks!

Really
But really...you need to have some patience there grasshopper...someone will help you eventually, but you've just shown that waiting less than 1 day for a response is too much for you. I'd hate to see how you deal with waiting for 1 or more years in a hole like Thompson!

This is the new generation in our midst...instant gratification. They can't seem to function without it. Give it a week fella, then if no one has responded, post the question politely again. Insulting the group and "rolling your eyes" certainly will not get people to help you any quicker.

Buy a CAA membership - it's only $65, but peace of mind if your car craps out in the middle of nowhere while you are driving. McDonalds has free coffee refills - so save your cup from the first one in the morning. If you have to stay in a mo/hotel, do a THOROUGH check of the mattress/bedframe etc.. before you put any clothing on it - Bedbugs are nasty little critters. Also, off-season motel rates are probably cheaper in small towns than larger ones, but, OTOH, many Super8's have breakfast included in the room price.
The lurking phenomenon seems to have died down/out in TH since Skyward went t.u... I'm sure that if you were to move up to TH, there'd be some opportunities there. Easier for a company to hire Johnny-on-the-spot who they can meet and talk to, than Bud from Toronto who "can be there in two weeks."
Good Luck

Say, what's that mountain goat doing up here in the mist?

Well, that was the story a few months back in Victoria. It may well have been a local promo, though.

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
Thanks Hava Java, I am actually pretty patient but moving and the road trip and all that comes with it is all that's on my mind right now, I am trying to gather as much information in advance as I can.. I am sure, u as a pilot, can relate to my feelings at the moment too where I am saying my good byes to my family, friends and loved ones knowing that I am going to be gone for few years....
North Shore, I just love how you always like to help a pilot who is starting out and I am sure good karma will follow you whereever you go my friend... As for the CAA membership, thanks so much for the reminder, I will get on that on Monday. I might just sleep in my small Maxima so I can save a few bucks on the motel, unless of course I can get a good deal (=< $50 a night) on the way... I am currently looking at Thompson's classified to get an idea on how much I will be paying for a shared accommodation and whether I will be able to find a job to survive until I can get my chance...
Thanks again guys!

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
I heard that Perimeter had quite a few people interview at Jazz recently. There might be a lot of movement out there. That might reduce the ramp wait time.
I would suggest that you try the other operators out there as Calm Air is also hiring. They'll probably take a couple of people from Fast Air, Sky North and Keewatin. I know Fast Air uses new pilots to dispatch or groom planes. I think Keewatin uses low time pilots for the ramp. I don't know about SkyNorth.

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
I think all of those guys are down in Winnipeg. If you're actually driving to Thompson, I think Missinippi has a base there. Don't know if that is where their office is located.

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
Hey BE20 driver!
Do you suggest I wait in Winnipeg and apply for job there before I head up to Thompson or do they hire directly from their bases in YTH ?
Thanks

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
I don't work for any of those companies so I'm not sure how they hire. I would guess it's all done out of Winnipeg but I am just guessing. Best to ask a Perimeter guy or better yet, call ahead or stop in Winnipeg first and ask their head office if hiring is done locally. Might just save you a trip up to Thompson.

Ok sounds good, I will have to go through Winnipeg anyways on my way from Hamilton so I will stay a day or two there and check things out before I continue north.. Thanks a lot !

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
Dont go to Perimeter in YTH looking for a ground job. Its all done through HR in YWG. It would be a waste of a drive unless you planned on hitting Missinipi anyways, which is a good start gig from what ive heard. Main office may be in The Pas though
Re: The road trip and the wait.....
Instead of sleeping in the old maxima give couchsurfers a try!!!
you'll meet great people, make friends, and one guy I know ended up staying at a pilots place and got hired the next day. ( Right place at the right time.)
Good luck!!
BTW. There is a lot of hiring right now in the Q.

A device is yet to be invented that will measure my indifference to this remark.

Look up different operators around manitoba and ontario and try and hit them up on the way by. its worth the try

Be mindful of CO poisoning risks if you sleep in the car.

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
I am planning a stop in YWG but I heard from an acquaintance (who was already been there once) that they don't like you to show up at their door and they will ask you to apply online.. I have already sent my resume to Missinippi Airways but will follow up by stopping there once I am there..fly-drink-chicks-music wrote:Dont go to Perimeter in YTH looking for a ground job. I checked that out yesterday and it seems like a very good idea, I am going to do a little bit more research today because I don't wanna end up in some crazy ppls basement somehow lol...
I don't speak enough French to be able to work in Quebec! although I wish I did....
I am planning on that too, lots of info there so I will have to go through the operators and see who is likely to hire a low timer.. Thank you !Mr-fix-it wrote:http://wwwapps.tc.gc.ca/Saf-Sec-Sur/2/o ... x?lang=eng

I plan to have the engine off while I sleep (assuming I actually do end up sleeping in as planned) but I will make sure I have a couple of blankets for the cold.. Thank you!Louis wrote:Be mindful of CO poisoning risks if you sleep in the car.

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
Couple of things.
If you even plan to nap in your parked car, get a Carbon Monoxide detector. Available at Home Depot for around $50, batteries not included.
Perimiter is hiring, they have an ad out. They seem to be looking for guys who they can upgrade quickly. That may not be you, but there still may be some low time positions. So, I'd catch them in Winnipeg, then catch them in Thompson, then do the old "hey remember me" thing on the way back through Winnipeg.
Good luck

Re: The road trip and the wait.....
I'm happy to see that alot of the guys and gals on here are putting in the time to help a fellow aviator with advice.
I did that road trip a while ago myself and I used couch surfers as someone else alluded to on here. It worked out fine, he was a super nice guy and a student pilot himself, and I got to meet a few people through him.
Make sure you include T-Bay as part of your road trip.
Best of luck to you, and keep us posted on how things go.
Cheers,
D2F
