Start a new non-profit airline
Hey guys, are you interested about starting a brand new non profit airline in Canada?
With all the sh** I heard about pilots working for free, why not?
We will give the opportunity for everyone to travel by air. Not to mention all the taxes that a nonprofit corporation could save.
For example, take an old 737 and start a daily round-trip flight YHZ-YUL-YYZ-YWG-YYC-YVR.
So, according to you, is it possible? All suggestions are welcome.

I thought all airlines were non-profit...as in they don't make one!

although this "non-profit" airline will probably still have a board of executives all making millions of dollars.

Re: Start a new non-profit airline
Problem is, you won't be able to find a person to clean and empty lavatories for less than what you pay the pilots. Unless, that is, that you hire a PILOT to do it.
Re: Start a new non-profit airline
How about a not for profit, religious airline. You could save taxes and be government subsidized. And if you overnight your clapped out 737 in Vancouver you could use it as a homeless shelter.

Re: Start a new non-profit airline
Great idea. Non Profit, must stay in the Black. Tickets and Freight pay their way. Fuel price up, ticket prices up, or both go down together. It would be a great example to present airlines. And, it will cease to exist if not efficient. "Supply and Demand", without politics.

Re: Start a new non-profit airline
And who is going to invest enough in order for you to purchase or lease said old 737 unless you promise them a return on their investment (a.k.a. profit)?take an old 737...
DId you hear the one about the jurisprudence fetishist? He got off on a technicality.
Re: Start a new non-profit airline
Operating a non-asset based, non-profit airline brings up many challenges. Firstly, if there is no profit you won't get the investors and government subsidies are hard to get and will not cover the startup.
Secondly any business ESPECIALLY an airline that operates without capital and solely on cash flow will never stick around long. First hardship that comes along (economy, terrorism, high fuel prices) and you are shutting down doors.

Investment is one thing, but operating in the Black is another. A good business plan will tell you how long it will take to build up a Cash Reserve. Customers will pay a fair price. There are a lot of Airliners rotting in the desert which some owner may rather see working.
Re: Start a new non-profit airline
You don't even need to hire CPL holders....
Sell PPLs training, then let them rent the 737 to fly for you, then reimburse them. You are non-profit, right?CAR 401.28(4) The holder of a private pilot licence may receive reimbursement from a charitable, not-for-profit or public security organization in respect of a flight conducted by the holder as a volunteer for that organization if the reimbursement

(a) in the case of an aircraft owned by the holder, is paid at a rate based on distance travelled or number of hours flown and does not exceed the total of the holder’s direct operating costs and the fees charged against the aircraft in respect of the flight; or

Not such a novel idea, Saudi Arabian, Iran Air, Royal Brunei, and a few other airlines in the Muslim world (and El Al) already are exactly that. Also, they are not for profit, but they are for Prophet. How about a not for profit, religious airline.

Re: Start a new non-profit airline
Capital for this airline wont be a problem. Get all the pilots to pay the company for the 737 type rating use that money to buy or lease the aircraft. The flying public will finally be happy they will be able to go for CYVR to YYZ for $1 each way. Oh wait! this type of airline has already come and gone.

How about communism too? Maybe a nice non-profit communist airline where everybody including the ramp rats and the CEO make the same wage?

Re: Start a new non-profit airline
And why would anyone ever pay to do so if such a party existed? The profit margins are low enough as it is with maintenance, fuel, and other costs. It's also not particularly religious. In the third quarter of 2010 the Company saw an operational profit of $55.6 million compared to an
operational profit of $23.8 million in the comparable quarter last year
