Emergency landing on Highway East of Montreal . . video . .
On Board Video kudos to the pilot for keeping his cool!!!
A young pilot showed nerves of steel when his engine cut out and managed to land his Cessna on a highway east of Montreal.
Motorists had quite the surprise when the plane touched down between several cars after suffering the mechanical failure on Monday afternoon.
Video obtained by QMI Agency shows the plane rolling along the highway, which runs between Montreal and the Eastern Townships.
The pilot and three passengers were not injured.
The plane had taken off from Bromont, Que., in the townships, and was en route to northwestern Quebec when the pilot was forced to abort.
The pilot, Ugo Derouet, has a private pilot’s license and is studying to become a commercial pilot.
The Transportation Safety Board of Canada will investigate. 'source'

Re: Emergency landing on Highway East of Montreal . . video
Nice job, but a silly question from a noob. It sounded like he was speaking French to ATC, Is communication in languages other than English permissible?
Re: Emergency landing on Highway East of Montreal . . video
I believe in Quebec it is common practise. So much for rules and regulations. This is the law, Oh you're from quebec? Then this is the law.
Re: Emergency landing on Highway East of Montreal . . video
In Quebec the choice is yours and determined by the language that you first use to establish communications.
from the AIM - http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/p ... u-3092.htm
from the AIM - http://www.tc.gc.ca/eng/civilaviation/p ... u-3092.htm
The use of English and French for aeronautical radio
communications in Canada is detailed in sections 602.133,
602.134, and 602.135 of the CARs. The regulations specify
that air traffic services shall be provided in English and sets
out the locations where services shall be provided in French
as well. The tables containing the names of those locations,
as well as the pertinent section of the CARs are contained in
COM Annex A.
For safety and operational efficiency, once the language
to be used has been determined, the pilot should refrain
from changing language in the course of communications
without formal notification to that effect. In addition, pilots
should endeavour to become thoroughly familiar with the
aeronautical phraseology and terminology applicable to the
type of service being provided in the official language of their
choice.

Not sure what law you speak of, since every country I know of in the world you speak either English of the language of the land on the radio. It is a common misbelief that English is the only language spoken on the radio in aviation around the world.
In Quebec, the official language is French, therefore French is permitted on the radio. Makes sense to me.

Good job!!
But in addition to fixing whatever is wrong with the engine, somebody needs to do something with those wheel bearings. They aren't supposed to buzz like that...

Re: Emergency landing on Highway East of Montreal . . video
Great job! Only thing i would add is, what took him so long to stop when on the ground?
He had to stop slowly, so the ass tailgater didn't rear end him?
Cool video thanks!

The pilot managed to land an airplane on the Highway and all you have to say is another stupid comment about French comm. What's the deal anyway with pilots from Québec? When we fly "outside" our province, we do speak english. When we got english speaking pilots in Québec , we behave ourself and answer in your language . MUSKEG, the water bucket is still waiting by the hangar door for your first solo. Your mommy is asking you to clean your bedroom. Leave your PC and go upstairs, dinner's ready!MUSKEG wrote:I believe in Quebec it is common practise. So much for rules and regulations. This is the law, Oh you're from quebec? Then this is the law.

Yeah I was curious as to why he didn't come to a stop earlier, I can understand his waiting until he was past the bridge but it seems to go on forever. I didn't think a cessna would even roll that far!

If this were true, even remotely close to 100% of the time, there would be no discussion.La Mouette wrote: When we got english speaking pilots in Québec , we behave ourself and answer in your language . La mouette ( The seagull )

* Mod Cap 'ON'* OK, the topic is the nice job done by the pilot to get himself and his pax down in one piece, NOT English vs French in Canadian aviation.
Carry on...

Could see where this was going.ArcticKat wrote:Nice job, but a silly question from a noob. It sounded like he was speaking French to ATC, Is communication in languages other than English permissible?
Two comments.
1) Awsome job on the dead stick by the pilot!
2) There are 2 places in Canada OUTSIDE of Quebec where French is spoken (in an ATC context). Ottawa is the first and Iqaluit Nunavut is the second. Go figure on the second one.

If you look VERY closely at about 39 - 40 secs in, it appears the carb heat might be off. I wonder if carb ice is to blame?

back on topic.
Great job to the pilot! I don't care what language you were speaking, that was some good aviating right there
Re: Emergency landing on Highway East of Montreal . . video
I'm beginning to regret asking my original question, I didn't realise I was opening such a can of worms.
Re: Emergency landing on Highway East of Montreal . . video
r22, sorry I missed that sneaky key word in there..."Canada"! My bad.
Sorry, I get riled up about this subject because I find in general there seems to be a fair bit of ignorance when it comes to radio languages around the world. All to often people seem to think English is the only language ever allowed on the radio, and Quebec seems to be some sort of international exception, whereas it is definitely not.

Nice landing. Seemed pretty calm throughout. Personally, I would've probably stopped filming long enough to give one of these

Turn right/left heading XXX, vectors for the hell of it.

I think he rolled so long 'cause he was looking to get the thing off the road on the right side... had to get to a flat spot with no guard-rail...
...and was that Old MacDonald's airplane? (reg- EIO?)

Good to see a happy ending once in a while.

Re: Emergency landing on Highway East of Montreal . . video
Nice job by this young guy, he kept his wits about him.
I can easily see why he kept it rolling, first off, people behind him would be absolutly slacked jawed, second, it seemed to me he was looking for enough of a shoulder to park the A/C. Many years ago in I had complete engine failure on C180, oil on the windscreen, the whole nine yards.
I was flying for a lodge, and it was my first job. I ended up dead sticking onto a lake, barely made it, I think I cleared the top of the trees by inches. The lodge owner was with me and we fortunately had a couple of paddles, took us a couple of hours to paddle the buck80 to an outpost camp up the lake, but the adrenaline rush was amazing,
paddle like I was in the Olympics. AHH to be 19 again!
