RCMP say one person is dead and eight people are injured, according to early reports from the scene of a plane crash in northern Manitoba.
RCMP said shortly after 10 a.m., a 911 call was received from a passenger onboard an aircraft advising of a plane crash near Snow Lake.
The plane reportedly had several passengers on board and several people were seriously injured.
RCMP, along with several paramedics and volunteer fire officials were dispatched to the scene, which is in the bush about 10 kilometres east of the Snow Lake Airport.
Rescuers reached the plane before noon and found some of the victims had serious injuries.
RCMP Staff Sgt. Line Karpish would not identify the victim until the situation is clearer and next of kin have been notified.
"One fatality has been reported. Our reports are eight people hurt, and one deceased," Karpish said.
"They’re still doing triage out there (and) radio communications are horrible," Karpish said.
"The rescue efforts have been very difficult. This is in the middle of nowhere, for all intents and purposes.
"They had to cut their way in," said Karpish.
She said a wide range of rescue services are involved, including the Snow Lake fire department, provincial conservation and water stewardship, and RCMP.
A Canadian Forces Hercules is above the crash site, waiting for a break in the weather, Karpish said.
"The weather is very bad. We have a Herc circling around — he can’t land and they can’t jump."
Karpish said Snow Lake has a very small RCMP detachment, and that The Pas and Flin Flon Mounties are coming to help.

Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18
No exaggeration in that at all, since when does 105 minutes constitute "Hours" While they're at it they should have called STARS out of Winnipeg, no doubt they'd have been on the scene within mere minutes and saved everyone.Just after 10 a.m. Sunday, 911 dispatchers got a call from a person who was on board the plane when it crashed.
Emergency services were dispatched to a wooded area about 10 kilometres east of the Snow Lake Airport.
RCMP said it took hours to find the plane and rescuers only reached it around 11:45 a.m.
An unfortunate event, I hope everyone recovers swiftly.

One dead after Snow Lake plane crash RCMP say one person is dead and eight people are injured, according to early reports from the scene of a plane crash in northern Manitoba.
RCMP said shortly after 10 a.m., a 911 call was received from a passenger onboard an aircraft advising of a plane crash near Snow Lake. Snow Lake is 700 kilometres northwest of Winnipeg.
Transportation Safety Board of Canada investigator Ross Peden was getting ready to fly to Snow Lake early this afternoon.
"We don’t know very much at this time," Peden said. "We should be on the scene later on this evening."
Peden said that the plane is a Cessna 208 Caravan operated by Gogal Air Services.
"Folks are out in the bush right now helping people. There’s a medivac plane on the way right now," Snow Lake Mayor Clarence Fisher said early this afternoon.
Fisher said the hospital is well-equipped and staffed by Dr. Neil Macleod and several nurses, but has no operating room. They can certainly stabilize the victims of the plane crash, said the mayor.
"It would put it close to the top of what it could handle," Fisher said.
"The Snow Lake Airport is 15 kilometres from town, this site is another 10 kilometres" in deep bush, Fisher said. The nearest road is called the old Stall Lake Mine road, the mayor said.
Fisher said Snow Lake has no regular passenger service to Winnipeg, but Gogal Air Services flies back and forth regularly.
"You’ll have a fair number of contractors, mining companies, executives coming in," he said.
Gogal is a family business, and also owns Burntwood fly-in fishing and hunting lodge, the mayor said. Father Larry Gogal and sons Brad and Mark are the air service’s pilots, Fisher said.

Not sure if it's related but I landed last night around 2330 and heard one possibly two Hercs go out using their rescue call sign.
Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18
Hmmm, dispatched for a rescue mission 12 hours prior to the accident? Probably not related. You could try posting your assumptions over in this thread though, it would at least appear legitimate there. viewtopic.php?f=118&t=85412ZBBYLW wrote:Not sure if it's related but I landed last night around 2330 and heard one possibly two Hercs go out using their rescue call sign.

I suppose it counts to read the message. I saw 10AM and thoughts when the wreckage was fine. Less skimming more reading.FlyGy wrote:Hmmm, dispatched for a rescue mission 12 hours prior to the accident? Probably not related. A 40-year-old pilot from Snow Lake was killed and seven male passengers suffered a variety of injuries in a plane crash near the town in northern Manitoba.
RCMP said shortly after 10 a.m., a 911 call was received from a passenger on board the plane advising of a crash near Snow Lake.
The pilot’s name was not released by the RCMP, however, a resident in town said that Mark Gogal, son of the company owner Larry Gogal, died in the crash.
"Everyone’s in shock here," said one man from Snow Lake, who didn’t want his name used. "It’s something we’ve never dealt with here before.
"Everyone’s very upset."
Another member of the community said some employees of Dumas Mine Contracting out of eastern Canada were aboard the plane and were taken first to Snow Lake Health Centre. The injured were then medivaced to hospitals in either The Pas, Flin Flon or Thompson.
Calls to both Gogal Air Services and Dumas Mine Contracting were not returned.
After the 911 call came in, RCMP, along with paramedics and volunteer fire officials were dispatched to the scene, which is in the bush about two kilometres east of the Snow Lake airport and about 10 kms from town.
Rescuers reached the site of the wreckage just before noon.
Snow Lake is 685 kilometres north of Winnipeg.
A northern contractor, Gerald Strilkiwski, used machinery to clear a path through the bush so emergency vehicles could get to the site of the plane crash, said a Snow Lake town official.
Deputy mayor Rupert Klyne also said dozens of residents raced to the scene on snowmobiles and ATVs.
"With a tragedy like this in Snow Lake, you could count on machines coming from all directions," he said.

Gogal is a family business, and also owns Burntwood fly-in fishing and hunting lodge, the mayor said. Father Larry Gogal and sons Brad and Mark are the air service’s pilots, Fisher said.

Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18
Since when did the TSB start posting pictures of there accident investigations on Twitter only hours after the accident?
That's a bit much isn't it?
If that was me in that crash I wouldn't want my wife seeing that.
No respect anymore.

Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18
I'm curious to know if they were IFR or not. From flightaware I don't see any IFR flight plans at all for that plane within the last 18 months (but it could just be flightaware screwing up). Clearly it would be utterly and completely insane to fly all the way to Winnipeg VFR in that weather, so I would like to give them the benefit of the doubt and assume they were IFR.
Icing is a possibility, although it seems unlikely that it would build up enough to cause a crash 2 miles from the airport unless it's a repeat of N9530F.

Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18
If you look at the company on TC they are just authorized for VFR operation.

Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18
My condolences to the Gogal family. What I find rather strange, considering the tragic outcome of this accident, is that the nose and the pilot side of the cockpit remained practically intact (even the plexiglass is undamaged). Right side of the fuselage is torn open and yet all passengers survived. It could have been much worse too - fortunately there was no post-crash fire.

Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18
Do you think it is respectful posting the accident pictures on this website? No respect anymore
Some people here should understand how such posts, and all the speculative ones, effect the survivors and families involved...

Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18 (Speculation Thread)
Condolences to all involved with the victims.
Now,
It is an accident forum on an aviation website, people have a choice to read it or not. The "speculation" stuff has been gone over time and again, and I will not rehash it here. That is what pilots do, it's not out of a lack of respect - for that we have Fox News, CNN, et al.
As for photos, there are hundreds of photos of crashed airplanes on this site, and countless elsewhere, as long as people are not posting inappropriate gore then I have no problem allowing it. If we are going to discuss these things and photos become available then I really don't have a problem with it. If requests are made to us by operators or families to remove photos we do, and often entire threads.

Re: Snow Lake Crash Nov18 (Speculation Thread)
Very sad.
I'm curious whether the pilot was wearing his shoulder harness, considering the intact appearance the the cockpit.
