2014 Hiring

Post by redbaron »

Hello

Have the results of the first bidding for bases come out yet? Anyone have any ideas on what the hiring plan for 2014 looks like or when updates will be available? Thanks.

Base bids have been awarded for January 31st start.

As far as hiring, I believe 2 classes for the 37 were cancelled this fall. I would imagine there are quite a few in the pool eagerly waiting. Have not heard any numbers for 2014, but my guess there won't be much hiring going on the next while at WJ. It appears most expansion will be through encore right now. I could be wrong but this is the impression I am getting.

Hi All,
I’ve been keeping the guys internally in the loop and I’ll provide a quick update here.

2014 hiring will be made available soon as we are in the final stages of building the 2014 summer schedule. (some cool stuff coming)
Encore continues to hire FO's (filling October and November classes) and I’ll be turning on the WestJet application soon. We will start WJ interviewing likely in November.

All current people sitting in the WJ pool (only about 20) can remain, should they choose, as we anticipate the first courses around March. In all likelihood we will need pilots before then, but we really need to get the bases settled first in order to plan these base assignments. In talking with the crew planners, we expect all bases to have an up-take (should marketing see the growth).

I hope that helps!

Dave

Is there still spots in the Oct. GS? Some of my references have been called but not all of them... not sure what that means. Either way, time is running out to give two weeks notice for Oct I guess.

Jep,
If I were you, I'd call HR, or DaveP or whoever you have contact info for.
The latest shows no hiring before February. Sorry Brah.

If someone is going to be based outside of YYC (say YYZ or YVR) do they get hotel accommodations/per diems for their GS in YYC?

Beings that YYC is the most Junior F/O base, I doubt you'll be based anywhere but there to begin with, making the whole hotel, perdiem issue a moot point...

Since all growth is going to be in the east, I expect no new hires in YYC anytime soon.
So, with that being said, I'd expect the hotels etc to be paid, but I've not heard it officially.

guess the flow is out today, basically it says first 50ish DE captains all straight across dates of hire from encore to wetjet. Everyone else after the start up group will essentially flow in full classes to wetjet. The way my brother explained it was if wetjet needs a class of say 10, encore should have wetjets planning months ahead in order to provide 100 percent flow for that class. He also said that if encore cant provide 100% and say takes 8 the 2 left behind at encore will also get that date of hire as if he went with the classmates. Very limited off the street hiring coming for wetjet now. not quite date of hire but a nice compromise and a reward for the start up dudes.

It will be interesting to see if they can fulfil a 100 percent flow with 40 more airframes to arrive over the next 2 1/2 years. With that in mind, when they due flow over they start at the bottom of another pay scale. They (WJPA) should have allowed all the Encore pilots to keep their date of hire, since Encore is 49% owned by westjet.

'They' might not have had a choice in the matter. From a corporate point-of-view, the company is now on the hook for twice the amount of training. If you start WJE transfers off at 1st year pay, that essentially pays for the training, compared to what they'd have to pay people who transferred across and came in at yr3 salary (assuming 2 years at WJE)

All the above IMHO - please feel free to tell me I'm full of it if I know not what I speak of..

Dave
Welcome back DaveP,

Just for clarification, were you referring to mainline hiring?

The recent good news of a defined flow through from Encore indicates that the first Encore pilots will be eligible to flow in April 2014. With 20 or so pilots in the pool plus a number of Encore pilots eligible to flow come spring, is it safe to assume little hiring at WJ will occur?

Thanks for all the input!

There's a least a dozen (or two) of us in YYC that couldn't hold YYZ, so as soon as YYZ spots open up, they will be filled by those of us "in line" for YYZ. So YYC for a new hire is probably pretty likely for the first course or two for 2014 (assuming YYC doesn't shrink).

DaveP, am I correct in my thinking?
