My N Quebec/Lab trip-As far from The Bahamas as you can get!
Had a fantastic 11 day trip last July to Subarctic Quebec and Labrador. Flew from Barnes Municipal (KBAF) to St Georges (CYSG) and then from there to Schefferville (CYKL) and finally over the very remote ghost town of Nitchequon before heading out to Labrador City (CYWK) for the remaining days.
Here is a full trip report complete with pics and video from each day. This whole area is my 2nd most favorite place in the entire world, only trailing the Bahamas as my #1 spot.

Mods: I wasn't sure what sub-forum to put this in, so feel free to move it if you see fit. Thanks

Tell us more about this "Nitchequon" place. Did you get out and poke around? Was there anything interesting in there? Sounds like an epic trip but I was hoping to see some more pictures from your destination.
Re: My N Quebec/Lab trip-As far from The Bahamas as you can
Unfort, I was not able to actually go to Nitchequon, but I did fly low over it for about 15 min getting a ton of pics of it. The runway was way too rough and littered with oil drums and a floatplane ride from CYWK would have cost me almost $3,000!! Here are the aerial pics I took of Nitchequon (all are public links)frozen solid wrote:Tell us more about this "Nitchequon" place. Did you get out and poke around? The "google" has provided me with answers... Hudsons bay post which was closed in the 1960s, radio station and weather station until 1986. The remaining buildings are recognizable, especially the big barn for inflating weather balloons.
It would be worth a poke around for sure, with a metal detector. It was a trading post from 1825, but continuously open from the late 1800s until 1943. Cool. Too bad you couldn't land.

It is my dream to someday snowmobile from Caniapiscau to Nitchequon on a perfect March day when its about -10C, little to no wind, and bright sun! I just envision it so vividly, its amazing.....
So much so, that I made this Neil Diamond music video flying to Nitchequon from Caniapiscau along the exact same path that I want to snowmobile it--as low as 30 ft AGL to make me think I was snowmobiling instead!

Realistically speaking, taking a Polaris there from Caniapiscau would be a hassle as it is far easier to get there from Labrador City.
But the most hassle free way to get to Nitchequon in the winter would be on a plane with skis for sure!!

Lived in schefferville for 6 years so your pics were a nice flashback. Cafe Bla Bla got me addicted to poutines!
Glad you had a great trip.
Cheers

I am kidding. Inside joke? Sort of.CoopAir wrote:Where did I mention a helicopter?? Or is this some inside joke?Beefitarian wrote:Atta boy coop. You misspelled "helicopter" at the end there.
I have only been in one of those rotary wing contraptions a couple of times. They would get between the obstacles on the runway there better though. But the most hassle free way to get to Nitchequon in the winter would be on a plane with skis for sure!!
I still admire your trip and hope you can get there safely by powered sled someday.
Do you have any interest in going to other similar places that have a decent gravel strip?

This thread is refreshing.

If it were a plane on skis, wouldn't you just land on the lake, not what's left of the runway?Beefitarian wrote:I am kidding. Inside joke? Sort of.CoopAir wrote:Where did I mention a helicopter?? Nowhere else in particular, but I do very much want to get my ASES rating and land on any one of the thousands of lakes out there!!Beefitarian wrote:CoopAir wrote:

Is there anywhere in Quebec, Labrador or Ontario where I could get my ASES rating and then rent such a plane as PIC after passing my checkride.
That'd be wayyy cool!!

No. And here's why.CoopAir wrote:

First and most important. I'm too dumb to have thought about that.
Next, how do I know the ice is strong enough to hold the plane up when I do one of my aircraft carrier style um? "Firm?" yes that's the word. Firm landings.
Third, that sounds way too cold. When exploring ghost towns, I would rather risk death by mosquito over bundling up to go see if the snow has buried everything interesting to look at.

Thanks for posting this Coop. I grew up in Schefferville and seeing those pics brought back some great memories!
