Northern Manitoba Airstrips
Does anyone know of any decent back country airstrips the would be good to fly to and and do some camping? Something with very little civilization nearby. Any suggestion would be appreciated.

Those are some great suggestions, but I'm using a Cessna 172 so I wouldn't mind something, say, within 300nm from Winnipeg.

The problem you are going to have is definitely going to be range then very few places have avgas for sale

True, but with long range tanks I should be able to have some options. I've just done very little flying up North, and was hoping there would be some gravel or grass airstrips I could camp beside. Something just North or Northeast of Lake Winnipeg. Possibly even on the East side of the lake.fish4life wrote:The problem you are going to have is definitely going to be range then very few places have avgas for sale

Does anyone have a CFS? There must be quite a few places north of the peg to get 100ll.
What do you want most out of the trip? On the right route it might seem like you are still in a well populated area while being quite a way north. There would be plenty of very sparsely settled space between stops. 300nm is much further that you need to go in Canada to be in seclusion.

With respect to refuelling, be aware that some of the remote locations while listing having fuel, may not at the actual time you wish to go, always call ahead. Like wise if the power goes out, pumps don't work. I'm not trying to discourage you, just be aware of these potential issues. Refuelling when you get there instead of just before you plan to depart is a good plan.

And if they are selling it by the barrel then that's what you buy regardless of how much fuel you need -- 205L min sale

100LL is becoming rarer all across the North and nearly impossible to find if you are on floats.
If you are camping you can always take some extra fuel with you in the cabin. If you are really keen, I am sure that one could fashion some sort of aerodynamic external belly tank on a LSTC, much like the old Beaver belly tank arrangement.
An extra 20-30 gallons would sure make a big difference no matter where you stash it.

In that case again not to discourage you but build yourself a good survival kit and have a sat phone / messenger with you as well if you want to go to one of these sparsely populated areas it may be a very long time until you could get help should something happen / break down.
Re: Northern Manitoba Airstrips
You can get avgas in the pas, gracelake, Thompson, GILLIM and maybe St Teresa pt (I think there is an operator with a Cherokee there) all the other reserves will have only jet fuel and that's for perimeter only usually.
Gods lake narrows is an awesome place for fishing.

Re: Northern Manitoba Airstrips
Contact the Manitoba Aviation Council, they recently published a large format chart of all the strips in Manitoba complete with all sorts of info about each strip. I think it's about $15.
The operator in St. Theresa Point is Alair. Al Hadland is the owner. No camping there though. Gods Lake Narrows might have gas if you talk to John Healey of Healey's Lodge. No camping there, but staying at the lodge is an option. And you can rent a boat and guide there.
Talk to Conservation in Bissett about the Wallace Lake strip. It might be useable even though it's been closed for several years. Only about 120 miles NE of Winnipeg and you could probably camp beside it. Lac du Bonnet has a really nice paved strip with camping close by. About 60 miles NE of Winnipeg

Pine dock from Wamair is not too far north but can be a fuel stop
Re: Northern Manitoba Airstrips
Yup we have 100 LL and jet for sale. We are just heading into our winter slowdown with roads opening up. If you are going to land in Pine Dock this time of year do a good inspection as our winter maintenance is limited at best. As for strips within your range there is always Matheson Island (again take a good look) Princess harbour which is actually a fire cut and currently snow covered, Bloodvein, Berens, Poplar River and Littlegrand Rapids for reserve strips. There is also a strip near the mouth of the pigeon river but I wouldn't go in there in a nose dragger or after any amount of rain as its pretty derelict. Finally there is a strip at Fishing lake, Wrong lake, Bolton Lake and Gods lake east that are all for lodge use so PPR.Magnetron wrote:Pine dock from Wamair is not too far north but can be a fuel stop
