Re: Whats the deal with Class E control zones?

Kamloops Radio routinely help sort out traffic, VFR-VFR and VFR-IFR. They don't have to but they do. Laura, Just a correction to your comment above. The reason why we at CYKA radio (and Sumspot Radio) "routinely help sort out traffic" is because we HAVE to. Traffic management is a primary function ...

Re: ATF Procedures

Question - where are we getting the linkage from a "straight in" IFR approach procedure and a straight in landing? (no circuit) What difference does the IFR procedure to conduct the IFR cloud breaking manouver make? Especially since you are almost always "straight in" from the FAF inbound? So if I f...

Re: Solar Impulse 2 trying to fly around the world on zero f

When all is said and done - John Q public will hear an electric airplane flew around the globe. PERIOD.

I think he has human "interest" figured out pretty good - they are not aviation nerds like us - around the world is around the world regardless of the number of stops.

Re: 767-300 to YQR

One could say the ole Regina has seen her fair share, both big and small. But seriously, the only thing that determines how big an airport can handle, after runway, is infrastructure. No fingers to accommodate - bit of an issue. No ability to top her off - serious issue. Regina is on the "pipeline" ...

Yes, Regina has seen bigger. Air Canada used to run their sun seeker 747 there also once a month in the winter for years. The Queen has been there on the A310. The Concorde has been there. Air Transat has been there. Air Cubana has been there....... It may be in a "have-not" province and ...

Re: 787 Battery Issues

I base this on the explosive chance of lithium ion batteries and all the work put into having them declared hazmat There are a few different formulations of L-Ion batteries. Some are quite dangerous when ruptured but the rechargeable types used in aircraft are not the same as the ones you see in Yo...

Re: Tu-95 exercises Sept 8,2014

Tom H not really sure what you're getting at? I am pretty sure that the airplanes engine(s) doesn't know what it's flying over. I'm also pretty sure that we aren't planning on operating any plane outside it's range so how long any particular coastline or landmass is becomes a formula based on airpla...

Re: cleared out of controlled airspace for an approach

Technically, its a clearance to DESCEND out of controlled airspace via an approach. ATC is concerned about 2 things here - separation and obstruction clearance. Once you are in uncontrolled airspace they don't worry about separation - do what you want. They are transferring obstruction clearance res...

Re: Too cold for YYZ workers

What utter nonsense on this page. The air temp was -23. Machines do not know "wind chill". Modern airliners are certified to operate in the stratosphere which last time I checked is normally -56C. To state that equipment was "frozen" is an insult to any Canadian that ever had to boost a car - minus ...

Re: March 11 2013 Air Canada Incident YYZ Embraer and a Van

I do however maintain the on this occasion ATC did not contribute to this event or become a hole in the cheese . We are not always blameless...and we make mistakes as much as any other part of the the profession...but this discussion/debate is around a specific incident...and it is that that I am u...

Re: March 11 2013 Air Canada Incident YYZ Embraer and a Van

Based on what? What was heard on LIVEatc...or the actual tapes themselves. I won't often raise my head above the line of fire during online debates....but in this case I feel that ATC is being brought into a discussion about procedures and standards when for once we are blameless . Gotta ask - have...

Re: March 11 2013 Air Canada Incident YYZ Embraer and a Van

Why is the media focusing on the actions of the crew? Simple! Rampie = minimum wage nobody. Pilot = highly trained professional in which we trust our lives. Questions? PS - I'm more concerned about the ATC instructions. Was it super busy? Was the freq so congested adding "Air Canada" was both imprac...

Re: ATC forcing diversions - a question

The OP hasn't really provided all the facts here. They didn't say how long the hold would be - but that they could fly 50 mins to the alternate. Was the hold going to be 50 minutes? Minimum fuel or an emergency fuel situation? Infringing on comfort zones or the regs? Anytime a pilot is concerned abo...

Re: What do you know about Lithium batteries?

In my experience - engineers tend to be over-educated or too proud to see what lessor folk have already figured out. Lithium batteries of any chemistry are frickin sensitive and dangerous - yes dangerous - if not handled very carefully. 1000's of careless common folk have already learned this lesson...

Re: Good information on Dreamliner problems

Look up A123 battery systems. These were by far the best compromise between performance and safety - these suckers could take a lickin and not get all "fire in your face" about it. However they did weigh twice as much as LiPo or LiIon although packed a better punch with less voltage sag over a charg...

Just to clarify, ATC means Air Traffic Control and is exclusive to IFR or VFR control - not FSS. FSS, while a valuable part of the ANS system is not Air Traffic Control. It means Flight Service Specialist or Flight Service Station - not an ATC Tower. Completely different jobs, requirements and caree...

Almost ALL the pieces are already in place to completely replace pilots. 1- CPDLC- controller pilot data link communications - full digital data links are already established. It isn't a stretch to imagine that instead of one remote pilot "flying/monitoring" one remote plane, you simply hand-off the...
