Re: Union at West Jet
Arctic 84, no offence but you need a reality check because the 1150 other pilots aren't on here complaining. Paranoia is very easy....trust.....that takes some work. If you don't like things, there are elections coming in January. PACT constitution.....really? If you compare it to a Union it is wor...

Here is some good reading for you:

One of my favourite parts..

Re: Encore's Pay and Work Conditions
You are totally wrong here. Until you have your 'own' lawyer defending your rights after an accident or incident - you are not well protected. Currently the system in place now gets you joint council, meaning company and employee are represented by the same lawyer. As soon as their is a conflict of...

Re: Encore's Pay and Work Conditions
You guys sure talk a big game, but I sure what the wjpa and Westjet would cover would far outweigh your own lawyer. If its like any other corporate airline code, you are to be defended. So is there or has there been an instance where you haven't been covered? The world is full of what if's. have yo...

Re: Encore's Pay and Work Conditions
It is apparent that you do not realize the difference. The WJPA is a well intentioned and hard working group of individuals but the system doesn't allow them to be independent (they know this, you can read PACT meeting minutes for a long way back). WestJet Pilot Association and WestJet Airlines are ...

Re: Westjet strands flyers in Moncton during March break
My experience is it generally isn't the weather that will mess you up in the maritimes, its the runway. There are much tighter limitations than 3 winters ago. An RFI more than an hour old in active conditions, no braking reports, and then there are RSC reports that are very inconsistent and subjecti...

Re: Crew Rostering/Scheduling Scheme at Westjet
Taking my lumps: Bid one days, plus a few days off. Self induced because I gave it nothing to fall back on or directions. Working two five days, a four day and training. Since the month was a write off anyway I picked up some more. Looking forward to March. I did get the days off. Had I given it any...

Re: Crew Rostering/Scheduling Scheme at Westjet
The 'sodomize' doesn't happen unless it can't fit all requests in for a group with common bids. The system then looks back at satisfaction for previous months and looks for who was happy, and will knock them to other bids. If you don't have low weighted preferences near the bottom of your 16 request...

Re: RNP is revolutionizing the instrument approach
When RNP first came out there was more of a difference between RNP .3 to a higher limit. Our guy at the time who was helping to build the program actually left to work for Naverus on a LOA but something was done around that time he left to work within the 'theory' to allow the lower minima at the hi...

As Encore grows and its airplanes arrive, it will weaken Porter's sticker price. I still see the end game here resulting in a merger.

Re: College of Pilots?
I joined the College of Pilots a few days ago. They asked for my licence # (to determine if in fact I am a Comm or ATPL and elegable to join), my address, and my credit card (just like when I order something from Amazon). Didn't seem too sinister to me. Why did I join - well been in this business f...

Re: Would you want the WJ pilot's contract?
It's approximately 5%. However, when viewed in the context of the income that an AC pilot forgoes vis a vis his WJ counterpart, it is more like 25%. ie. WJ B737 CA T4's $200K, and has zero deferred compensation. AC A320 CA T4's $160K, and has significant deferred compensation. Therefore, in additio...

Just a quick point that no one 'has' to work the full days. You can drop trips and pay is adjusted accordingly.

Well written letter by Joe Sparling. I worked a brief contract for him in the mid 90's and have a lot of respect for the company. Great culture, and a solid airline. I don't doubt it will be a challenge for WestJet.

Re: Airport with shortest runway serviced by Westjet?
SNA (Orange County) is the shortest 'major airport' runway in the US and probably one of the shortest 'normal' runways WestJet lands on. YXX and YYJ would need a reason like high winds, or a closure to not use a longer runway available. I think SNA is 5700 feet long. Its not a big deal to land on, b...

How old are the AC 767's chugging back and forth to Hawaii? Seems they do just fine. It's an ETOPS maintenance program... I'd say you are pretty safe!

Exactly as Moe said above. I think the 850 is the best bang for the buck too when looking at comparable products. I too have flown with lots military pilots here at WestJet. I think most I've met have had similar experience to you. Try and look up who's here and see if they will put a word in; it's a fun job.
